The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an Engineer to perform engineering and construction administration work for the Stormwater Construction Branch within the Utilities Design and Construction Division.

Utilities Design and Construction Division is responsible for managing the bid advertisement, contract award processes, and overseeing all aspects of construction contract management for transportation projects and stormwater projects including inspection, testing, code compliance, warranty, and project closeout.

Note: Position is in the Stormwater Construction Branch, located in the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia. This position may be eligible for telework..

*A $5,000 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Engineer IV position.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid driver's license.

  • Possession of a valid Virginia Professional Engineer or Architect license.

An individual who possesses a valid Professional Engineer or Architect license in another state will be granted a temporary exemption to this requirement pending the Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers & Landscape Architects decision regarding that individual's application for reciprocity. As a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect, signs and seals own work product and/or that of subordinate staff.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be highly motivated; possess the skills necessary to work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment; organized, and detail oriented as it relates to construction management and documentation and with strong communication skills.

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in construction management for stormwater, major utility, or public works projects.

  • Four (4) years of experience preparing, procuring, administering, and managing construction and engineering contracts for site or utility construction.

  • Experience with project financial and budgetary planning, tracking, and reporting at the project level.

  • Experience in developing and preparing construction specifications.

  • Experience in the close-out of construction contracts, to include closing permits, and resolution of punch list items.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to hear safety alarms in a construction site. Ability to lift 30 pounds. Ability to produce handwritten and typed documents. Ability to walk steep grades and off-street terrain. Approximately 20% of the time spent on field investigations, measurements, meetings, and reviews of Stormwater construction projects including Natural Channel Design, Stormwater basin retrofits, dredging projects, dam construction or repairs, and other stormwater projects. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:

Positions within this classification that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
