Manheim Remarketing Inc Assistant News Editor in Fairborn, Ohio
The Assistant News Editor is key in driving our coverage around topics of priority and audience interest, helping to oversee the editorial operations of news teams. They're expected to possess excellent news judgement, digital content chops, and strong management, leadership and communication skills. This person will communicate clear expectations for quality digital content that is informative and engaging for our digital audiences in a variety of products and channels. They will also have a strong understanding and analysis of digital performance metrics, and use that feedback to shape coverage around key topics. This role is also expected to help deliver content for print products. Management experience is a necessity in this role, as the editor will be tasked with coaching and helping reporters shape digital content ideas and their execution. Strong collaboration with the editorial and product teams is key, as this role will be heavily involved in planning strong digital content to engage audiences and meet deadline and budget obligations. The position is based in Dayton, Ohio . Cox First Media has a hybrid work environment. Cox First Media includes Dayton Daily News, Journal-News and the Springfield News-Sun. While this role is focused on Dayton Daily News, this position may be asked to do work that focuses on one of the other brands in Cox First Media, depending on organizational priorities, staffing and audience needs. Requirements Experience in digital storytelling, including experience in multiple digital story formats - lists, summaries, video, audio, graphics and data visualization Guide journalists to the creation of well-created digital content with appropriate visuals that engage our digital audience Use analytics to track performance of digital content, leveraging learnings and analysis to improve coverage and increase audience engagement Has experience or track record that demonstrates an ability to quickly acquire familiarity with the key communities, important issues, and topics of interest of our coverage areas and stakeholders Demonstrates versatility in content creation, including digital content forms, story types, and approaches to content With guidance from the Managing Editor, lead a staff to cover the most important local topics and news from our key communities Shows proficiency in reporting using records and databases, and has a clear understanding of state and federal laws relating to public records and public meetings Has full understanding of standards of libel and slander Understands and aligns the team's work to support newsroom content and digital audience strategies, delivering content that is impactful and thorough, contributing to success of our efforts to maintain and grow subscribers Handles other assignments as needed, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 6 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 4 years' experience; a Ph.D. and 1 year experience in a related field; or 10 years' experience in a related field. 1+ year of experience in management or lead role Three years of experience at a news media organization (local, digital, newspaper, TV, radio, etc.) Knowledge and experience with digital publishing tools (such as a CMS, social media channels, etc.) Ability to lead longer-term projects and initiatives in content department and organization at large Familiarity with using digital engagement metrics, including leveraging learnings to inform coverage topics and digital content optimization to engage audience USD 70,700.00 - 106,100.00 per year Compensation: Compensation includes a base salary of $70,700.00 - $106,100.00.
