Job Description Summary

The Sr. Engineering Manager – Advanced Measurement Technologies reports directly to the Instrumentation Engineering and Operations (IEO) Section Leader. This manager will lead the Advanced Measurements Technology engineering team, which is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and technical specialists. This manager will work with other staff and teams in Test Systems Engineering and Flight Test Operation (TSE & FTO) organization, suppliers, and airframe customers to drive multiple technology maturation plans to closure ahead of multiple commercial and military technology demonstrator programs for GE Aerospace. This position may have management and leadership responsibility for exempt employees, non-exempt employees, contingent workers and purchased services.

In this role you will be responsible for major and complex assignments with long-term business implications, manage complex issues within functional area(s) of expertise, and contribute to the overall business strategy. You will lead activities contributing to the design and development of products, solutions, and systems. Includes activities linked to technical improvement of existing products and components. Technology maturation projects in this role will have environmental robustness and data accuracy as its critical aims.

High levels of operational judgment are required to achieve outcomes required. You will oversee the team’s ability to achieve service, quality, and timeliness of objectives. You must drive initiatives to improve the effectiveness of the team and interfaces with other functions to provide effective coordination of metrics, dashboards, functional processes, and cross-functional initiatives. The role is subject to operating policy objectives but there is high autonomy within the role.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure on-time delivery of technology maturation projects to perform stated test missions within accuracy expectations.

  • Management of a team of people covering several engineering disciplines supporting technology maturation projects. Provide leadership and technical direction for assigned program tasks and personnel.

  • Establish work group goals within framework of section technical and financial objectives. Define roles and responsibilities for assigned personnel.

  • Maintain broad awareness of efforts within group to assure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work and reviews, appropriate use of resources, and responsiveness to customer / program needs.

  • Identify need for technical and program reviews within the organization; Lead technical reviews and participate as a reviewer. Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.

  • Formulate and implement plans to achieve technical and program requirements, schedules, and contract commitments. Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments as appropriate.

  • Communicates difficult concepts and may influence others' options on particular topics. May guide others to consider a different point of view.

  • Interprets internal and external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes, or services. Stays informed of industry trends that may inform work.

  • Influence the development of strategy for the area of responsibility, including control of resources and policy formulation.

  • Facilitate communication of technical, and project information between organizations and within work group.

  • Execute and provide guidance for the analysis/evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product/program requirements.

  • Define and develop product processes related to design, analysis, test, materials, manufacture, quality and/or productivity.

  • Communicate with management on technical, organizational, resource and personnel issues.

  • Promote professional growth through timely performance feedback, training, coaching, counseling, and assignments.

  • Ensure company compliance initiatives and training requirements are implemented within work group.

  • Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to problems.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science. (Or a Bachelor's degree in other disciplines from an accredited university or college with at least 6 years of experience in a technical or engineering function)

  • Minimum of 5 additional years of experience in a Technical or Engineering position.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible and off-shift hours (including 1st, 2nd, 3rd shift, nights, weekends, and holidays) when business needs dictate.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to and support operations at offsite locations when business needs dictate.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Security Clearance.

  • Some functions may need to obtain and maintain access to Special Access Programs and be subject to additional security screening.

  • Ability to work onsite for majority of work hours.

Desired Characteristics

  • Expertise in one or more of the following disciplines – electrical engineering, optical engineering, advanced imaging, measurement/sensing technologies or science, and embedded systems

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Experience leading teams directly or indirectly

  • Ability to guide, coach and influence others

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems

  • Project management and execution experience in a cross-functional team environment with projects of moderate complexity across.

  • Ability to lead several programs/projects simultaneously. Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs

  • Established project management skills

  • Familiarity with design, test and analysis tools, turbomachinery operation, airframe/propulsion system integration

  • Familiarity turbomachinery instrumentation (application, data acquisition and troubleshooting)

  • Experience with propulsion testing techniques and methods

  • Ability to establish priorities in a fast-moving dynamic environment.

  • Ability to interface effectively with all levels within the company as well as organizations outside GE, i.e., regulatory agencies and subject matter experts.
