Position Overview:

The Professional Staff Nurse is a registered nurse and essential member of the care team, responsible for setting care standards, managing patient care, and collaborating with colleagues to achieve optimal outcomes. The role includes leadership, collaboration, and accountability, ensuring a high standard of care for patients and their families.

The final job title and rate of pay will be based upon both individual qualifications and candidate choice. Any required certifications and contributions based on job title will be afforded a timeframe to obtain. The minimum rate of pay for a non-BSN Professional Staff Nurse is $31.10.

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts. Identify opportunities for improvement and share these with colleagues and management. Take responsibility for enhancing patient satisfaction with the quality of care and service.

  • Utilize research and evidence-based practices to support clinical care improvements. Identify relevant research issues or articles, discuss quality improvement opportunities during multidisciplinary rounds, and influence patient care plans.

  • Apply the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment. Develop daily goals and plans of care for patients, involving them as partners and considering their holistic needs.

  • Demonstrate critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues for patients within each episode of care. Effectively communicate patient conditions to other caregivers and make recommendations for care adjustments.

  • Ensure comprehensive patient documentation that promotes clear communication between caregivers. Incorporate national professional organization standards, as well as business unit and health system goals, to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

  • Foster caring, compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, creating a patient-focused experience.

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Be sensitive to cultural differences and hold peers accountable for fostering healthy relationships. Maintain a healthy work-life balance, model safe work hours, and communicate any identified safety hazards in the workplace.

  • Commit to ongoing professional development to improve practice and patient care. Actively participate in unit-based shared governance and goal setting, supporting efforts to improve care quality and the work environment.

  • Respond willingly to care team member needs for assistance and partnership, contributing to efforts that improve patient care and the professional practice environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of adult (and/or pediatric, if applicable) learning principles when teaching patients, families, students, and new staff members. Provide effective teaching and guidance to ensure smooth transitions in patient care, including to other levels of care or home.

  • Support the development of new staff and colleagues, potentially serving as a preceptor. Encourage a culture of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development through feedback and self-improvement.

The candidate must demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to provide care for patients of all ages, as well as the ability to assess and interpret patient data to meet age-specific needs. Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to establish positive relationships with patients, families, and healthcare teams are essential. The role requires mobility, manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC-approved national certification preferred

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure or Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) required

  • CPR certification (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire

  • Graduate nurses must pass the licensure exam within 6 months of hire

  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or a multistate license through the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)

UPMC offers flexible shift options, including night and weekend shifts with a premium pay differential. Employees interested in these programs must have at least 6 months of nursing experience.
