Description

JOB SUMMARY: The student tutor will provide students who are failing a course or performing poorly in a course with instructional help outside of their normal classes. A tutor should be capable of assisting in all subjects. This assistance is typically provided to groups of five or less students but can be offered individually, if a group cannot be formed.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:• Promote and preserve the mission of LECOM;• Act in a friendly, professional manner when dealing with faculty, students and visitors at all times;• Maintain confidentiality, professional appearance and pleasant demeanor;• Meet with those students, on an as needed basis, that have been assigned to them by the Coordinator of Student Tutoring; providing individual or group instruction that will help the student or students improve their performance;• Student tutors should regularly provide the Coordinator of Student Tutoring with the names of those students who fail to attend scheduled sessions and those whose performance has improved to a level where tutoring assistance is no longer necessary;• A tutor will report to the Coordinator of Student Tutoring;• Weekly time sheets will be submitted to the Coordinator of Student Tutoring; and• Other duties as needed / assigned by the Provost and/or her designee to maintain efficient and effective daily operations.

Minimum Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.• Excellent organizational skills;• Excellent communication skills;• The student tutor must demonstrate the motor skills required of all LECOM podiatry school students as specified in the Health & Technical Standards section of the student handbook;• Maintaining an established work schedule;• Ability to be self-reliant and follow instructions;• Maintaining confidentiality of work related information and materials;• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;• The ability to accept work requests from other managers and supervisors in a respectful and cooperative manner and to independently answer such requests;• The ability to work cooperatively and collegially with others, consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect and EEO rules and regulations;• The ability to devote full attention and energy to the important work of LECOM in a timely fashion; and• Be able to be flexible to accept other duties needed/assigned for the Institution’s needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and experience equivalent to: being a current LECOM student with a LECOM grade point average of 3.0 or higher and completion of at least the first semester of podiatry education at LECOM (students repeating the year may not qualify). With the approval of the Director of Curriculum and Student Achievement and the Assistant Dean of Pre-Clinical Education, Podiatry School a first year podiatry student in their first semester with previous experience or expertise in a given subject area may be permitted to serve as a tutor for first year podiatry students and students in the Masters of Medical Education program requiring assistance in that subject area.
