UPMC Patient Care Technician, Women's Hospital OR in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join the Women's Hospital Operating Room.

Schedule: Monday- Friday, 3pm-11:30pm

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Overview: The team member will help to pick surgical case items for the next day, set up rooms and equipment, and terminally clean the OR's at the end of the day. The terminal cleaning role helps to greatly reduce SSI's.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care, assists with procedures and daily activities. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

  • Provides feedback to RN and reports patient status changes.

  • Performs core nursing assistant tasks (blood glucose, weights, vitals, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) and at least 4 of: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal.

  • Reports equipment malfunctions, communicates effectively with departments, maintains professional relationships.

  • Contributes to unit activities (responding to call lights, phones, passing meal trays, transporting patients).

  • Receives feedback, identifies learning needs, improves skills, participates in self-review. Provides patient and family instruction under RN direction, manages patient restraints per protocol.

  • Communicates clearly with healthcare team, understands cultural diversity, supports workplace safety, maintains productive relationships. Adheres to patient care policies, complies with safety procedures.

  • Suggests and supports departmental changes, assumes responsibility, supports projects and quality initiatives.

  • Documents in medical records, performs clerical functions as needed.

  • Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills (phlebotomy/venipuncture, IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping/removal) based on department needs.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must have one of the following:

  • 1 year of general healthcare experience

  • 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion

  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with at least one clinical rotation completed

  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field

  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class. Successful completion of basic information system training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred. Effective communication skills, both oral and written.

  • EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment in such a program preferred.

  • Medication access limited to distribution to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire/transfer.

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

  • ACLS preferred
