UPMC Nursing Assistant - 8 South Neurology in Erie, Pennsylvania
UPMC Hamot is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Part-Time Nursing Assistant for our 8 South unit.
A nursing student with at least one clinical rotation is strongly preferred for this position.
8 South is a 20-bed unit specializing in the care of adult and geriatric neurological and neurosurgical patients. This unit serves individuals with a variety of neurological conditions, including cerebral vascular accidents (CVAs), seizures, transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), multiple sclerosis (MS), and other neurological disorders. Additionally, 8 South provides care for patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures such as craniotomies, back surgeries, spinal cord stimulators, deep brain stimulators, cranial nerve decompressions, and aneurysm coilings/clippings.
Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.
Job Responsibilities:
Patient Care: Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients as directed by the RN.
Patient Safety: Maintain a safe and clean environment, including safety checks, room cleanliness, equipment care, linen changes, and organizing patient areas.
Equipment & Supplies: Acquire, distribute, and stock supplies, assist with patient care equipment setup within the scope of the nursing assistant role, and perform messenger duties.
Nutritional Support: Deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers, and distribute patient mail.
Core Nursing Responsibilities: Perform key tasks such as blood glucose monitoring, weight checks, vital signs, intake and output (I&O), specimen collection, Foley care, and telemetry monitoring.
Patient Observations: Provide feedback to the RN regarding changes in patient status and care needs.
Restraints: Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician orders or hospital protocol.
Collaboration: Communicate clearly and effectively with the healthcare team, demonstrating an understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in health professions.
Workplace Safety: Support a safe working environment for patients and staff, adhering to safety policies and procedures.
Teamwork & Feedback: Actively engage with the team, receive constructive feedback, and identify learning needs. Assist in planning and prioritizing activities, as needed, and participate in self-reviews.
Companionship: Provide companionship and supervision to patients when required, ensuring their comfort and safety.
Documentation: Accurately document patient care in medical records according to established procedures.
General Support: Contribute to unit activities such as answering call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
Additional Responsibilities:
Support the department with clerical functions as needed.
Comply with standard precautions and safety policies, particularly related to bloodborne pathogens.
Adhere strictly to hospital policies and practices related to patient care and hospital information.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Successful completion of the UPMC Nursing Assistant or EIC training program preferred.
Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
Access to medications is limited to the distribution of medication to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR certification required, based on AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.
Act 34 Clearance.
