Greater Southern Tier BOCES EDUCATION GRANT SPECIALIST TRAINEE in Elmira, New York

LOCATION: ELMIRA, NY

Full-time (1.0 FTE), 8-hour day, 12 months per year; Competitive Civil Service Position

  • Initiates and researches sources for possible funding available for pilot educational projects and programs that are not currently operational or may be threatened due to lack of monies within the budget.

  • Utilizes a variety of resources for researching private/public, institutions, corporations, foundations who fund educational projects (i.e. Foundation directories, newsletters, the Internet, RFPs).

  • Develops framework in conjunction with district representatives and colleagues for programs that might be needed, such as: the purpose, how it is to be obtained, what staffing may be needed to affect its success, amount and breakdown of monies necessary to bring to successful conclusion, and the monitoring needed through an evaluative tool that will enhance the projects funding.

  • Maintains continued contact with public/private not-for-profit agency responsible for program administration to ensure fiscal compliance.

  • Assists with the preparation of grant applications, budget spreadsheets, and other paperwork such as the final narrative report on completed program success/failure (based upon conversation, narrative status reports and observation of the program).

  • Where appropriate, makes recommendations to administration on areas in which grant applications may be favorably received.

  • Prepares reports, conducts special projects, and other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

This is a competitive Civil Service position. The selected candidate must possess this title or be among the top three of a current, binding Civil Service list for the title or if no binding Civil Service list be in the top three after taking the required Civil Service exam for the title.

  • Required: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Education, or a related field.

  • Preferred: Good knowledge of grants preparation, educational principles and practices; working knowledge of the sources for funding in the area of the public, corporations, funding foundations and similar institutions; working knowledge of the principles and practices used in grants proposal applications and the administration of grants; ability to gather and analyze data, draw conclusions from, obtain data and present in a logical, concise manner both verbally and in written narrative format; ability to prepare detailed reports and to support recommendations; ability to conduct interviews for the purpose of obtaining information and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, private, corporate, industry and not-for-profit agencies and their representatives; ability to read and understand complex narrative material; ability to express oneself effectively both orally and in writing; resourcefulness; creativity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
