Description

The Elk River Recreation department is seeking a Recreation Intern who will be responsible for assisting with a variety of community events/programs, and with the preparation work for these events/programs. Learn how programs are developed and implemented and work together with recreation staff to develop your skills in general management of recreation facilities and programs. Must be a current student working toward a bachelor's degree in a recreation field. Must be available to work full time (up to 40 hours/week) from May-August, primarily days and evenings, minimal weekends.

May be eligible for Earned Sick and Safe Time upon qualification for this benefit.2025 Salary range is $17-20/hr. Recreation Intern Position Description

Department: Business Services

Immediate Supervisor: Recreation Coordinator(s)

Pay Grade: $17-$20/hour

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Positions Supervised:May be responsible for work direction of other part-time staff and participants.

Position Summary:The Recreation Intern is responsible for assisting with a variety of community events/programs, and with the preparation work for these events/programs. Availability to work full time (up to 40 hours/week) from May-August.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with event coordination.

  • Communicates with event vendors, volunteers, and attendees.

  • Confirms event/program details.

  • Informs supervisory staff of any concerns or issues involving staff, participants, or community individuals.

  • Works together with individuals in an effective and efficient manner on Parks and Recreation programs using all forms of medium (i.e. phone, in-person, email).

  • Provides positive customer service.

  • Utilizes problem solving skills to resolve any issues, concerns, or complaints.

  • Assists in preparation and implementation.

  • Participates in recordkeeping, report completion, and evaluation.

  • Promotes events/programs.

  • Acquires event/program supplies.

  • Assesses facility and program equipment and inventory.

  • Orders supplies, creates signage, and assists with event/program set-up and tear-down.

  • Performs other essential job duties.

  • Leads or assists with light maintenance.

  • Administers basic first aid or contacts appropriate officials for more severe situations.

  • Participates in safety training and follows all safety policies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current student working toward a bachelor’s degree in a recreation related field.

  • Experience through employment or volunteering coordinating events/programs.

  • Previous customer service experience.

  • Ability to relate to both youth and adults.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

  • Must be able to socially, physically and mentally perform all essential position functions in the working conditions as described.

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent.

  • Valid driver’s license or ability to get to program sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with a parks and recreation agency or related field.

  • Coursework towards or degree in Parks and Recreation or related field.

  • Knowledge of Elk River Parks & Recreation Department and its programs.

  • Experience coordinating logistics of community recreational events/programs through employment or volunteering.

  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certified

Working Conditions

Working conditions may include both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor weather conditions may include sun, rain, wind, humidity, high and low temperatures, snow and other natural weather conditions. Program participants may range in age from infant to older adults, with group sizes ranging from 4 to 4,000 or more.
