Job Description

Job Overview: The Community Outreach Assistant plays a key role in providing trauma-informed health and wellness services to refugees and immigrants served by the IRC in New Jersey. The Community Outreach Assistant carries out activities to ensure clients have the information, tools, and understanding effectively navigate local health systems, benefits, and resources. They work closely with clients, colleagues, and external partners to serve clients and improve access to quality healthcare and health promotion services.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a regular caseload of clients all with varying levels of health needs.

  • Collaborate with teams across IRC NJ to identify client needs and coordinate services for clients.

  • Facilitate in-language health education programming related to overall health and wellness of clients including, health systems navigation, health insurance, patient rights, mental health and psychosocial support, and other relevant health education needs, in individual and small group formats.

  • Prepare and accompany clients to health appointments; teach clients how to advocate for themselves, make appointments, obtain transportation, and other relevant skills.

  • Lead client-facing health education sessions on multiple topics, including but not limited to health insurance, navigating the healthcare system, resources for people with disabilities, and mental and emotional well-being.

  • Maintain up-to-date documentation in client case files; document all services provided in relevant databases.

  • Continuously expand knowledge and understanding of community resources, services, and programs available to clients, and educate clients how to access such resources.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

    Education: High school diploma; bachelor’s degree in public health, community health, social work, or related field of study strongly preferred.

    Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-year relevant experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred.

    Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills.

  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

  • Proven commitment to maintaining confidentiality on sensitive and private communications.

    Language Skills:

  • Spoken and written fluency in English and at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Haitian Creole.

    Working Environment:

  • Standard office working environment, remote work, and field time to perform above outlined responsibilities.

    Compensation:Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
