Elgin Math and Science Academy Gifted Teacher in Elgin, Illinois

The Elgin Math and Science Academy Charter School (EMSA, www.elginmathandscience.org (http://www.elginmathandscience.org)) opened in August of 2018 to all students residing in the U-46 attendance area. EMSA is a kindergarten through eighth grade school.

EMSA is seeking a compelling, committed, and innovative Gifted Teacher that will help to establish a positive learning environment that promotes Wow & Wonder in the classroom while modeling and encouraging the habits of scholarship for students' self-discipline.

Qualifications:

Preferred certification in K-8 elementary teacher, gifted certification a plus.

Responsibilities:

The Gifted Teacher will work extensively with students to expand content to provide more challenges to students who are testing in the 85th percentile minimally (more criteria for placement may be determined at a later time). A Gifted teacher addresses the specific needs of a particular child when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient. The Gifted teacher will have a contained classroom of 3-4 grade levels of students that are exceptionally talented in both reading and math. They will also support teachers with coaching to provide more extension of content to students.

Gifted teachers work with the teacher to design methods of learning that are most appropriate for each child to provide the child with more complex learning experiences. Responsibilities of the Gifted teacher consist of the following:

  • Consult frequently with classroom teachers on matters relating to content extension using our progress-monitoring instrument as a base.

  • Design gifted and write lesson plans detailing methods and materials.

  • Assist in the evaluation of ongoing programs and make recommendations for change.

  • Assist teachers and other administrators and/or supervisors in implementing more complexities in learning for all students.

  • Keep the parents informed as to the purposes and progress of the gifted program.

  • Work with support staff and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the gifted program with the total curriculum.

  • Consult with curriculum committees studying such topics as textbook selection, vocabulary development, concept development, supplementary materials and the development of study skills.

  • Promote interest in deeper learning across the school and content areas.

  • Work with the classroom teacher to coordinate content instruction designed to meet the individual needs of students.

  • Work with the classroom teacher to monitor student progress.

  • Perform other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the supervisor.

  • Familiar with Inquiry Based Learning, Problem Based Learning and STEAM.
