There are no direct reports with this position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under close supervision, employees in this job class plan and execute small scale landscaping operations and maintain grounds and landscape of business. This job class requires knowledge of preparing and grading terrain, applying fertilizers, seeding, laying sod, and transplanting shrubs and plants, and the ability to cultivate them, using gardening implements and power-operated equipment.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  1. *Uses a weed eater, pulls weeds and maintains flower beds.

  2. *Uses a blower and manually picks up trash, leaves, limbs, and provides a clean and neat appearance of the grounds.

  3. *Mows and trims lawns using hand, walking-types or riding movers.

  4. *Operates, inspects and adjusts irrigation systems for proper water distribution.

    • Trims hedges and trees away from facilities, structures and walkways, for safety.
  5. *Applies fertilizer, weed killer, and necessary pesticides.

  6. *Operates street sweeper for roads and parking lots.

  7. *Prunes trees and palm trees by using chain saws and high reach equipment.

  8. *Plants new and repairs established lawns by grading grounds for proper water drainage.

  9. *Installs turf by using seed mixtures, sods, and fertilizer.

  10. *Installs and replaces new shrubs, trees and flower beds when damaged.

  11. *Monitors equipment used and reports any malfunction or other issues. Including sharpening blades, clean air filters and lubing of grounds equipment.

  12. *Aerates and removes thatch.

  13. *Travels between facilities and work locations.

  14. *May be required to drive company vehicle or small dump truck.

  15. *Completes basic paperwork and calculated materials and time.

  16. *Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least three years of work experience in gardening, or knowledge of grounds maintenance standards, techniques and materials;

  • Repairs underground irrigation lines and low voltage electrical wiring for automatic irrigation systems;

  • Ability to prune trees and palm trees using high reach equipment;

  • Proper use of PPE;

  • Ability to identify and work safely with appropriate manual and power tools, mechanical and electrical equipment, for the task assigned;

  • Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time, and adapt to changing work priorities;

  • Ability to be flexible due to change of schedule, work duration and tasks;

  • Communicate and work collaboratively and professionally on a team with various skill levels, and of various ethnic, religious, cultural and other backgrounds, and demonstrate good customer service skills;

  • Ability to communicate effectively;

  • Ability to follow instructions.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED

An equivalent amount of related work experience will be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

• Standing and walking

• Climbing ladders or step stools

• Maneuvering around equipment

• Bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and shoveling

• Lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds

• Pushing or pulling equipment weighing up to 75 pounds

• Carrying a 20-pound backpack blower

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed at a customer’s location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment. Transporting to work locations within the site. At times, may be required to work in confined spaces. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat. Travel to other worksites is required.
