Superconducting Mechanical Design Group Leader

Position Summary

As a Superconducting Mechanical Group Leader, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Develop, modify, and approve programs, budgets, design methods, documentation, testing, or policies and procedures for a specific subject matter domain, including

  • Creating program standards

  • Identifying regulatory requirements

  • Ensuring operability of technical devices and/or execution of programs

  • Preventative maintenance, repair, and parts management for assigned technical equipment

  • Records management

  • Metrics assuring the efficacy of the program

  • Training in the program (including awareness training and education)

  • Serve as subject matter expert for a specific subject matter domain, including advising laboratory staff

  • Work with stakeholders (including external consultants) to develop and present design solutions, and convene design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement

  • Produce and document effective design solutions by developing concepts, performing complex engineering calculations, and creating CAD designs/details to provide engineering support for the fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of technical equipment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge base of specialized fabrication capabilities available in the industry

  • Proficient in producing and documenting design solutions

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals in the manufacturing sector and constructively manage critical supplier relationships in technical performance.

  • Demonstrated ability to be transparent and accountable to line management, peers, and customers

  • Engineering Expertise – the deep knowledge and understanding of the regulatory and legal framework (including but not limited to federal, state, local, and MSU policies, processes, and regulations), engineering practices, and sound judgment regarding their implementation to contribute to organizational performance and success.

Masters -Engineering or Physics

Desired Degree

Doctorate -Engineering or Physics

Minimum Requirements

  • An advanced degree in Engineering or Physics

  • Five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting, and computer systems and requires experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, the fabrication, and assembly of sophisticated research equipment, industry to produce and check scientific research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced Mechanical Engineering degree with eight to ten years of experience

  • Experience with system-level detailing and checking mechanical drawings for production

  • Experience with SolidWorks and PDM Systems

  • Experience in the design, fabrication, and complex assembly of accelerator equipment

  • Experience in fabrication techniques, installation, and operations setup, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems
