Michigan State University(MSU) Specialist - Outreach-Fixed Term in East Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Michigan State University is seeking a Specialist-Outreach, also known as Assistant Director, for its Child Development Laboratories. The CDL operates two laboratory sites. This position consists of:

  • supervising staff and students;
  • managing procedures for ordering supplies;
  • assisting in the planning and implementation of school wide events;
  • assisting with public relations and marketing (regular bulleting announcements via Remind, Facebook, Listserv);
  • ensure understanding and application of developmentally appropriate practice and child development within program;
  • maintain personnel records as required by State of Michigan Licensing, Great Start to Quality, NAEYC and MSU;
  • provide orientation for new student staff;
  • assist in long range planning for building, grounds and related programming;
  • follow university policies and guidelines in the operation of the CDL;
  • model and facilitate positive staff interactions with children, families, researchers, and visitors;
  • represent the CDL with the Parent Council;
  • represent the Child Development Laboratories as a member of an area professional organization;
  • contribute to leadership and participate in professional staff conference presentations;
  • assist with periodic special projects as determined by the Director of the Child Development Laboratories;
  • provide for appropriate in-service training;
  • keep center in compliance with State of Michigan licensing renewals, Great Start to Quality, Head Start, Great Start Readiness Program, CACFP and NAEYC and meet with representatives of those agencies as necessary, including regular reporting and renewal processes;
  • organize and monitor collection of NAEYC criteria for classrooms and program; 
  • compose annual NAEYC report for site with staff input;
  • develop and maintain relationships with collaborating partners including, but not limited to, Haslett Public Schools, C.A.C.S. Head Start, Ingham Intermediate School District
  • provide family survey dissemination and analysis
  • participate in Ingham ISD Director's Group
  • presentation in HDFS courses, including, but not limited to HDFS 424, 441, 321
  • presentation to groups patricpating in the Child Develpoment Labratories International Worshop program
  • provide tours and information about the Child Development Laboratoris to national and international visitors interested in preservice teaching training
  • present at state and national conferences on early care and education practices

Required Degree

Masters -Child Development or Early Childhood Education

Desired Degree

Doctorate -Child Development or Early Childhood Education

Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education;
  • Qualified in the State of Michigan and NAEYC as Program Director 
  • CPR/First Aid Certification; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • experience in a setting with linguistically and culturally diverse families;
  • minimum of 5 years successful experience in administration in an early childhood program;
  • doctorate degree in Early Childhood Education.
