Position Summary

The research group led by Dr. Yun Liang in the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University is currently accepting applications for a full-time Research Assistant I position to assist with research activities, maintenance of lab equipment, and administrative tasks including inventory management and purchasing. The Liang Lab is interested in understanding the molecular basis of autoimmune diseases, with the ultimate goal of finding cures for these debilitating diseases. To achieve this goal, we use a combination of technologies including cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, genomics, and animal models, and we work in close collaboration with physician-scientists for translational studies. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong desire to advance scientific projects to join our team.

The position’s responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • 20% - Perform experimental tests and assays following established protocols when applicable. Read literature and design assays as needed. Optimize and validate tests. Design experiments for both hypothesis-driven and exploratory studies in a rigorous manner. Obtain materials and reagents needed to perform the assays. Perform experiments with sufficient and well-designed controls and replicates.

  • 45% - Records results and analyze results using appropriate statistical methods. Design and carry out experiments to troubleshoot when needed. Present results to PI in an organized and timely manner. Disseminate results in the forms of publication and conference presentations.

  • 15% - Consult with principal investigator and lab members to assist in planning and designing experiments. Research literature to maintain a current knowledge of laboratory research methods and terminology.

  • 10% - Assist in coordinating research operations. Act as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding research projects and experiments.

  • 10% - Oversee laboratory needs and order materials, supplies, and equipment. Operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.

    This position is well suited for recent graduates interested in a career in biotechnology, however, all qualified individuals are encouraged to apply. The starting salary is $50,549. This is a limited term position funded for one (1) year from date of hire with extension contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding. The duties to be performed by this position require regular in-person presence in East Lansing, MI, and is not remote-friendly . The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

    The Department of Physiology and Division of Pathology Division have significant teaching and research missions. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in life sciences or a related field; one to three years of related non-course based and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures, safety requirements, performing analytical, and research techniques related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Candidate must have a record of hands-on research experience in molecular biology, cell biology and/or biochemistry in the specific research area. Ability to demonstrate that they are detail oriented, highly self-motivated, organized, and enthusiastic to work both individually and as part of a collaborative and multidisciplinary team. May require software specific skills, special licensing, and/or certification in the area of research.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Previous experience working in a laboratory technician role

  • Lab management experience

  • Excellent and effective communication skills

  • Demonstrate participation in programs designed to promote inclusion and multicultural perspectives and develop and foster trust in a culture of collaboration
