Position Summary

The Assistant Dean of Clerkship Education will provide administrative and academic oversight to instruction within the clerkship, with a concentration on the fourth year of the osteopathic clerkship program. The Assistant Dean of Clerkship Education will serve within the Division of Medical Education as a fixed-term faculty member with the academic rank of assistant or associate professor. The position will report to the Associate Dean for Clerkship Education and aid with operational details for the clerkship program. Primary duties will be academic, including curriculum development and instruction, with an option for maintaining part-time clinical duties (up to 20%).

Administration

  • Assist the Associate Dean for Clerkship Education in operational aspects of the curriculum.
    • Conduct site visits to clinical education sites to meet with students and faculty and monitor deployment of curriculum. 
    • Conduct student evaluations of clerkship experiences.
    • Assist with tracking and reporting of compliance with accreditation standards.
    • Assist with clerkship operations as needed.
    • Develops and maintains appropriate policies and data for the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) as related to the clerkship, including yearly assessment.
  • Participates in committees and other administrative duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Clerkship Education.
  • Participates in external accreditation and external program review processes, submissions, and follow-up actions.
  • Promotes inclusive excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and service.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and interpersonal communication in accordance with MSU professionalism standards and the COM Common Ground Framework for Professional Conduct.

Outreach

  • Participates in national meetings related to the delivery of medical education.

Education

Direct the curricular components of the year 4 clerkship. 

  • Develop and deploy instructional and assessment methods for the longitudinal clerkship didactic experiences, and integrate learning objectives with required clinical rotations, including the organized didactic components.
  • Evaluate outcomes of clerkship instruction.
  • Promote longitudinal integration of intraprofessional education and core competencies throughout the clerkship, including elements of professionalism, communication, systems-based practice, prevention, ethics, and lifelong learning.
  • Develop, deploy, and/or serve as instructor of record for various courses.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of competency assessment during the clerkship as related to the overall MSUCOM competency assessment plan.
  • Provide yearly assessment data and quality improvement initiatives regarding the clerkship curriculum for COCA, College Curriculum Committee, or other MSUCOM committees.

Collaborate with the other Assistant Dean of Clerkship Education, the Director of Preclinical Skills Education, and the OMM Clerkship Director to ensure continuity and best practices and to assess and track student outcomes across the four-year DO curriculum.

  • Assist with development and delivery of large-scale learning and assessment events, including simulations, skills testing, and others. 
  • Collaborates on the development, implementation, and continued assessment of competency-based education across the continuum.

Collaborate with the MSUCOM Department Course Assistants.

  • Promote/evaluate quality and consistency with course syllabi.
