Eversource Energy Associate Engineer, Substation Automation in East Berlin, Connecticut
The Engineer will work with complex systems and equipment, while providing engineering and technical services to support our growing organization. We offer a unique and exciting opportunity to explore the best of both worlds, working both in the office and the field on a variety of interesting projects. Areas of expertise include designing new substations and infrastructure, analyzing systems and disruptions to service, working with transformers, engineering the electrical protection and control circuits that handles the flow of power, and dealing with acceptance testing of equipment, failures of equipment and analysis of system disturbances.
Individual will be involved with the installation and maintenance of field communication equipment within substations. Individual will coordinate distribution substation automation work including human machine interface (HMI) design and implementation, RTU configuration, data concentrator configuration, frame relay setup and configuration, and other automation equipment associated with substations. Individual will assist in the development of the HMI system including the backend server, frontend application, and website. Individual will also initiate integrating new automation equipment onto the distribution system by identifying opportunities and technologies to solve ongoing problems. The ability to logically troubleshoot technical problems is also required. Individual must have strong computer skills and the ability to operate a variety of computer software programs related to RTU configuration, communications equipment and other related automation equipment; knowledge of object-oriented coding standards; demonstrate teamwork, strong communication skills and be self-motivated; and ensure that all required work is performed safely, on schedule, cost effectively and in accordance with company standards. Duties will include but are not limited to: performing technical review of automation equipment designs for substations under construction or modification for distribution substations; performing code review on contributions from other employees; assists in the scheduling of field personnel and their activities for various distribution automation projects; arrangements for staffing, materials and equipment with other groups such as Maintenance, System Operations Center, vendors and contractors according to prescribed schedules and methods; direct and demonstrate efforts to achieve world-class excellence regarding safe work practices and safety performance; and assures compliance with APM, OSHA and all company procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; Possesses and applies the fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Ability to analyze information, determine relevant facts, and make decisions.
Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization and with counter-parts in outside organizations.
Ability to understand and resolve engineering, business, and other technical issues.
Ability to communicate in a professional manner.
Ability to prioritize work and complete tasks with minimal guidance.
Knowledge of C#/VB.NET language.
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
Bachelor's degree in electrical or electronic engineering or electrical or electronic technology.
Zero to three years of experience in engineering, programming, or testing of complex electronic systems is required.
Experience in Energy Delivery or T&D maintenance is preferred. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car. A valid driver’s license is required.
