Hourly Rate: $19.37 - $20.55
Workdays/Hours: Up to 19 hours per week
shifts vary; 6:00pm - 9:00pm Weekdays; 8:30am - 2:00pm Saturdays (some daytime hours)We are seeking talented instructors who can plan, organize, and lead classes in one or more of the following specialty areas:
Dance - Youth-oriented
Fitness - Youth and teen-oriented, new trends for adults, spin, Zumba, yoga, meditation, stability ball Pilates, power strength training, and CrossFit
Martial Arts - Judo, Karate, and Tae Kwon Do
The ideal candidate will be skilled at keeping participants engaged, creating an experience, and connecting with the community. A successful instructor will be able to present a fully developed curriculum and guide participants of varying abilities to success in achieving the goals of the class. Creative themes and personal touches are encouraged. This is an opportunity to impart your skills to the Durham public while helping to ensure that education and wellness are affordable and available to all.
This position provides instruction to program participants in a specialty area that requires prior training and subject matter expertise. This includes leading and instructing fitness, dance, martial arts, sports, arts, crafts, cooking, and similar activities with a wellness or educational focus. Work involves facilitating skill development and assisting participants in reaching their individual goals. The position is responsible for preparing a curriculum within the parameters established by supervisory staff, setting up space for the activity, assembling equipment, and reporting on progress to aid in program improvements. Instruction is tailored to participants of varying ages and skill levels and adapted to accommodate differences in ability
Duties/Responsibilities
Represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.
Coordinates with supervisory staff on program schedules, facility availability, paperwork, needed purchases, contracts, surveys, and attendance records.
Requests staff assistance with needed equipment, access to spaces, and administrative materials.
Prepares class design, researches and practices class format, determines and prepares for equipment needs.
Anticipates basic needs such as temperature and lighting as well as any specific needs of planned participants.
Conducts class instruction, leads exercises, incorporates music into fitness routines, and maintains group dynamics.
Monitors exertion levels, guides participants in proper technique, and maintains safety in the class.
Takes responsibility for cleanliness of equipment before and after class, as well as proper disposition and secure storage of equipment when not in use.
Prepares information such as class description and summary of experience for marketing purposes.
Develops rapport with participants and maintains community relationships.
Attends all mandated City training sessions and staff meetings.
Maintains relevant certifications for area of specialty throughout the course of instruction.
Renders first aid in case of injury or distress.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
High School diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet ).
1 year of experience practicing a specialty area.
A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
A valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED – with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification and Bloodborne Pathogens Training certification within the first six months of employment.
Maintains relevant certifications for area of specialty throughout the course of instruction.
Additional Preferred Skills
Available from 6:00pm - 9:00pm on weekdays.
Available to teach at least 5 hours per week.
At least 6 months of experience teaching a skill to a group.
Able to effectively teach participants of different age groups, levels of ability, and cultures.
