Description

As an R&D Engineering Lead/Supervisor, you will oversee a multidisciplinary engineering team comprised of mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers working on varying product lines. You will guide the team, with guidance and direction from the Director of Product, through the design of new products per the Product Development Process (PDP) and ensure effective execution of product design from conception through sustainment. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate development schedules and setting the team up for success by aligning to the product roadmap, providing day-to-day direction, and evaluating the resources of the team as new product ideas are communicated.

The Research and Development team will report to this position.

This role requires a technically minded individual who is passionate about developing innovative products, wants to grow as a leader, and fosters a cohesive and collaborative environment. Proactive communication and listening skills are essential. StoneAge emphasizes leadership skills and teamwork across all departments. Continuous improvement in leadership and relationship-building skills is expected.

This position reports to the Director of Product with a starting salary of $105k-$115k per year (depending on experience). This is an onsite position located at our headquarters in Durango, CO.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Team Management

  • Supervise and counsel the Engineering team, guiding them in their roles and assisting with determining the needs for career development and training.

  • Contribute to performance reviews and feedback sessions with team members.

  • Propose annual merit pay increases based on performance.

  • Identify training needs and work with the Director of Product to suggest learning/development opportunities for teammates.

  • Develop and communicate team and individual goals and objectives collaboratively.

  • Participate in problem-solving activities and corrective actions for Engineering and interdepartmental issues with the guidance of the Director of Product.

  • Ensure accurate timekeeping for the Engineering team.

  • Communicate departmental issues to the Director of Product.

R&D/Engineering Leadership

  • Ensure designs and gate reviews are executed per the Product Development Process (PDP).

  • Supervise the Engineering team to ensure that priority projects are properly staffed and resourced.

  • Communicate project schedules, technical risks, and field tests regularly with the R&D Director of Product and Project Manager.

  • Collaborate with Sales and Operations to identify and support product improvements.

  • Align with project milestones, schedules, and project definitions for team projects.

  • Support SolidWorks Admin functions.

  • Champion the development and maintenance of regulatory technical data packages.

  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of an Engineering Best Practices Manual and associated team training.

  • Aid in the creation of the annual R&D budget and manage projects within budget constraints.

  • Collaborate with the StoneAge Solutions team on custom solutions that could become viable products.

  • Lead special projects or perform other duties as requested by the Director of Product.

Company Participation

  • Support Quality and Sales in the timely investigation, resolution, and reporting of design-related warranty returns.

  • Collaborate with the Applications Engineering Team to review product feedback and identify improvements.

  • Coordinate with the Priorities and Constraints team to ensure Engineering deliverables are on time and within budget.

  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the company's strategic initiatives, products, and services.

  • Collaborate with the Breadware team on intercompany projects, providing engineering and technology guidance as needed.

  • Participate in Joint Management meetings.

  • Support and participate in StoneAge’s Continuous Improvement initiatives, applying LEAN principles within the Engineering Team and working with other departments on cross-functional activities.

  • Participate in Annual Strategic Planning as directed by the R&D Engineering Manager.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • Leadership acumen and a collaborative nature.

  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Passion for leadership and talent development.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university (Mechanical or Electrical preferred).

  • 5+ years of relevant electro-mechanical design experience.

  • CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred).

  • Experience with schedule creation and management.

  • Experience in design for manufacturing.

  • Experience in product research and development.

  • Experience with regulatory compliance (FCC, CE, etc.).

  • Hands-on mechanical or machining experience.

  • Proficiency with MS Office software.

  • Commitment to advancing the waterblast industry through safe and effective work practices.

OTHER INFORMATION 

  • Travel may be required. 

  • Extended working hours may be needed at peak times or when short staffed. 

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. 

  • Must be able to lift heavy loads using proper lifting techniques as outlined in the StoneAge Employee Handbook.
