The Director of Private Credit will be responsible for establishing and overseeing all aspects of a new private credit portfolio for Optum Bank as well as reviewing and underwriting loan requests to help the bank build, maintain, and accurately risk grade a solid private credit portfolio. This role will involve working closely with analysts, underwriters, portfolio managers, credit administration, credit officers, and Bank leadership.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop policies, procedures, templates, and other critical structure to establish a quality private credit portfolio

  • Work with third-party partners to identify prospective private credit loans appropriate to the Bank’s risk appetite

  • Lead the due diligence and underwriting process of new loan opportunities and perform periodic reviews on existing loans

  • Make, recommend, and present credit decisions to credit administration and the credit committee through both effective written and verbal communication

  • Assess and recommend risk ratings for underwritten loans

  • Determine Higher Risk Borrower status in accordance with FDIC 12 CFR Part 327

  • Create credit underwriting memos which analyze the credit request, the borrower, financial and credit information, repayment sources, risks and mitigation, collateral, and compliance with applicable regulations and policies

  • Analyze and document loan modification requests

  • Be knowledgeable of Bank policies, guidelines, procedures, regulations and systems applicable to the credit function

  • Ensure that loan files and documentation are complete and remain up-to-date

  • Assist with portfolio management and monitoring duties

  • Ensure accuracy of internal reports and systems related to the portfolio

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with internal and external partners

  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced credit team members

  • Assist with driving strategic initiatives

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience analyzing business financial statements associated with loan requests

  • 7+ years of experience underwriting and structuring commercial loans with a private credit emphasis

  • 5+ years of experience making or recommending credit decisions on transactions > $10 million

  • 5+ years of experience working in a commercial credit or lending role with a commercial bank

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification (CFA, CAIA, etc.)

  • Completion of a formal commercial credit training program

  • Experience with middle market lending, lending to BDCs, and/or syndicated bank loans

  • Experience working out problem loans

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
