The Manager of Consumer Lending Underwriting leads and directs a team of HELOC and consumer lending underwriters. This role is responsible for ensuring timely and effective loan decision-making while balancing member needs within credit union risk tolerance. The Manager is also involved in managing, mentoring, and developing underwriting team members, requiring a blend of creativity, sound judgment, and empathy. Additionally, the role includes actively working in underwriting queues as a backup to ensure service levels are maintained.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensure appropriate allocation of resources to guarantee timely decision-making for HELOC and consumer lending applications.

  • Serve as the primary contact for decisions appealed by Loan Advisors, Branch staff, and members.

  • Oversee staffing levels and partner production based on business demands to maintain operational efficiency.

  • Manage the validation of risk evaluation models to ensure accurate and sound decision-making.

  • Review current market trends and peer activities for lending and risk management intelligence.

  • Facilitate regular dialogue between consumer lending underwriting and loan resolution teams to collaborate on trends and quality assurance.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum for underwriter development and mentor the team to adopt a consultative approach to loan decisions.

  • Recruit, hire, and train new additions to the underwriting team.

  • Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings and annual performance evaluations with the underwriting team, providing coaching and feedback.

  • Uncover opportunities to improve automation rates, make suggestions to enhance guidelines, and collaborate closely with the Lending System Administrator and management.

Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree and two to four years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrate proficiency and judgment in consumer lending underwriting.

  • Ability to perform in a member contact and sales environment and develop others to do the same.

  • Knowledge of consumer lending compliance and regulations.

  • Ability to evaluate strategies, prioritize activities, and make effective use of resources. Ability to listen effectively, present ideas clearly, concisely and in an organized manner.

  • Ability to use a PC in a windows environment, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point; experience with lending host and origination systems preferred.

  • Ability to think creatively.

The pay range for this position is listed above. Our pay ranges are designed to allow for candidates with various levels of experience and skill to be considered, and to allow room for growth to be achieved in a role over time. Generally, new hire salary offers fall within the minimum to midpoint of a pay range for many candidates. Any offer extended to a candidate will be based upon their individual combination of experience, knowledge, skills, and education as well as internal equity.
