Job Summary:

The Utility Worker II/ Flusher, will be responsible for performing unidirectional flushing on all new and existing water mains and occasionally will assist in all necessary tasks involved with the installation of water services and performing maintenance, repair and inspection of all Tidewater Utilities fire hydrants, valves, water mains, services, distribution systems components. Works on the repair and maintenance of sewage collection systems. These responsibilities require a reasonable standard of safety and care. Reports to a Distribution Foreman or others with job site oversight.

Work Performed:

  • Flush existing water mains per the routine flushing schedule

  • Flush new water mains as requested by the Distribution Foreman

  • Coordinate all flushing schedules with Production and Water Quality

  • Report any damages to system valves, blow offs, and fire hydrants

  • Installs saddles, valves and piping for water services.

  • Help to make necessary repairs to services, mains and fire hydrants.

  • Ensures current Miss Utility ticket is on file before digging with equipment.

  • Is responsible to uncover all marked or suspected utilities by shovel before proceeding.

  • Assist in using the enterprise GIS system to locate and verify valves and components.

  • Assist in using sewage collection maps to locate manholes and determine flow direction.

  • Accounts for materials used and transfer information onto appropriate work order.

  • Backfill material, tamp to ensure proper compaction, rake to remove clumps and seed.

  • Uses mechanical tampers to compact disturbed areas in roadways and parking lots.

  • Assist in the operational checks and inspections of fire hydrants, valves and other components.

  • Responds to sewer backups and assist in clearing the blockage using power equipment.

  • Perform other duties to offer assistance to other departments as directed.

  • May be required to work unscheduled overtime and will perform on-call duties.

  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions.

  • Use construction equipment with direction from more experienced staff.

  • Utilize Mobile Workforce Management (MWM) to receive/complete Field Activities (FAs)

  • Assist in other Distribution Utility work as dictated by business demands.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Capable to work well with others and with minimum direct supervision.

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and honestly with others.

  • Must be able to follow established safety procedures and recognize potential hazards.

  • Must be able to wear safety harness and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Be able to learn basic computer skills to complete timesheets, work orders, FAs and other tasks.

  • Skills to learn how to operate construction equipment such as backhoe, trencher, tamper.

  • Average overall mechanical skills.

  • Able to interact with customers in a professional manner and uphold the company’s image.

  • Valid CDL-A motor vehicle license or the ability to obtain a CDL-A within one year of hire.

  • Must possess a valid Approved Sampler/Tester Training Certificate from the Office of Drinking Water, or a valid Water Operator License.

  • Distribution Operator License is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Frequent standing, sitting, walking, and driving. Routinely using shovels and hand tools. Regularly, climbing in and out of trenches with and without ladders. Routinely, bending crouching, knelling, working in confining spaces and working over ones head. Occasionally, lifting and carrying object weighing as much as 50 pounds unassisted and more with assistance. Routinely walking on uneven ground and slopes.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working indoors and out in all types of weather conditions and temperatures. Routine exposures to continuous background noise and water treatment chemicals is more likely than not. Exposure to raw sewage is possible, but remote. Occasional exposure to loud noises and fumes is possible.

This position requires a Commercial Drivers License. Use of marijuana, whether allowed by state law or medical marijuana card, controlled substances, prescribed or otherwise, not allowed by the Federal Motor Carriers Administration of the United States Department of Transportation, disqualifies candidacy.

Candidates must possess authorization to work in the United States.

Candidates must be able to pass a drug screen, pre-employment physical, background check, and have a valid driver’s license. Additionally, must be cleared by Department of Defense to access government facility.
