JOB SUMMARY:

  • This is radio communication, public contact and clerical work in the Police Department.
  • An employee of this class is responsible for receiving communications and dispatching police units as necessary and appropriate in response to the calls.
  • Work involves the operation of the police radio system and other communication devices and maintaining Police Department records according to prescribed procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two years of general clerical experience which includes a high degree of public contact.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Residency within sixty miles of the corporate limits of the City of Douglas, within the United States, required within a reasonable time after hire date.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Receives and transmits telephone messages; receives E911 calls, verifies and dispatches the appropriate police, fire or medical unit by radio; monitors radio frequencies of other agencies and makes the appropriate message relays or responses when local units may be involved. This duty is done simultaneously in a fast paced environment.
  • Maintains awareness at all times concerning location of personnel dispatched and nature of calls. Also maintains awareness of personnel not dispatched but on active duty. Personnel at times can add up to 15 Officers and civilian staff.
  • Operates a radio and other communications equipment.
  • Maintains logs for radio transmissions, calls, EMS and on -call rosters.
  • Performs clerical duties for the Police Department.
  • Receives and files reports from other agencies, as well as those reports from patrol officers.
  • Does intense data entry in a fast-paced environment primarily through the use of Computer Aided Dispatch system; creating calls for service, updating call notes, tracking of personnel, accessing ACJIS and additional data entry.
  • Receives and processes counter complaints and inquiries from the public.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Receives cash and paper bonds, bonds at times will be large amounts of cash. Monies from reports & fingerprints.
  • Translates Assist non-Spanish speaking personnel with translation. Also assists other agencies with E-9-1-1 Spanish to English translation.
  • Will conduct pat down searches for female detainees (When female officer is not available).
  • Monitors security cameras throughout the interior and exterior of building.
  • Activates on-call personnel for after hours, weekend and holiday emergencies. This includes activating personnel for all other City services.
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the City by assuring that all policies, rules and regulations are followed and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City\'s Safety Handbook.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with residents, visitors and City staff; enthusiastically promotes the Citys goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • May perform other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

EVALUATION FACTORS:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to pass a polygraph test.

Ability to speak distinctly and effectively during emergency transmissions.

Ability to type and perform varied clerical tasks.

Ability to deal with irate and or emotionally distraught individuals in an effective and tactful manner.

Knowledge of office procedures and equipment.

Knowledge of FCC regulations governing the operation of radios by local law enforcement agencies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees and the public.

Ability to work rotating shifts.

Knowledge of emergency services sufficient to request ambulances, tow vehicles, fire fighting, sheriff, police and allied agency units, in a timely and effective manner.

Knowledge of computer form mail and Teletype sufficient to utilize the State and National Crime Information Centers and/or Motor Vehicles records.
