Job Posting Summary

The Deputy Provost for Strategic Initiatives to the Provost serves as a senior advisor and strategic partner to the university’s Provost team, playing a critical role in the administration, coordination, and execution of the Provost’s agenda. This position ensures the effective functioning of the Office of the Provost Senior Team, facilitates communication and collaboration across university leadership, and supports the achievement of institutional priorities. The Deputy Provost for Strategic Initiatives acts as a trusted confidant, providing insight, strategy, and problem-solving expertise to advance the university’s academic and operational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Advisory

  • Collaborate closely with the Provost and Leadership Team to develop, implement, and assess strategic initiatives that align with the university’s mission and goals

  • Provide high-level advice, analysis, and recommendations on key academic, administrative, and operational matters

  • Act as a liaison between the Provost and internal/external stakeholders, ensuring timely communication and alignment of priorities

Operational Oversight

  • Manage the daily operations of the Provost, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and adherence to institutional policies

  • Oversee and prioritize the Provost’s schedule, ensuring time is allocated to the most critical tasks and initiatives

  • Coordinate and facilitate Provost-led meetings, including preparing agendas, briefing materials, and follow-up actions

  • Supervises the Academic Affairs Administrator

Communication and Collaboration

  • Fosters open lines of communication with Associate Provosts, deans, faculty, staff, and other university leaders

  • Draft, review, and edit correspondence, speeches, and reports on behalf of the Provost

  • Ensure consistent messaging and alignment of goals across academic and administrative units

Project Management

  • Lead and manage cross-functional projects and initiatives assigned by the Provost, ensuring timely completion and alignment with institutional objectives

  • Monitor progress on university priorities and provide regular updates to the Provost and other stakeholders

  • Identify potential challenges and proactively develop solutions to address them

Leadership Support and Team Development

  • Support the professional development of team members and ensure alignment with the university’s values

  • Represent the Provost at meetings and events as needed, ensuring a high level of professionalism and effectiveness

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in higher education administration, business, public policy, or a related field; a terminal degree is preferred

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in higher education or a similarly complex organization

Skills and Competencies

  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and foster collaboration across diverse groups

  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and professionalism

  • Leadership experience with a track record of fostering team growth and development

  • Proficiency in project management tools and techniques

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the governance structure, policies, and culture of higher education institutions

  • Experience working closely with executive leadership in an academic setting

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time position that may require occasional evening and weekend hours

  • The Deputy Provost for Strategic Initiatives must be available to travel as needed for university-related events and engagements

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:

Deferred Compensation Plan

All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.

Defined Contribution Plan

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.

If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources. The Defined Contribution will begin as of the first day of the month following receipt of the completed waiver form.
