Job Posting Summary

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Mercy University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Assistant/Associate Professor position (non-tenure track) in the Department of Psychology. This role supports the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Master’s Program, a dynamic and inclusive program grounded in postmodern and systemic orientations. The program is dedicated to preparing socio-culturally responsive graduates for the National MFT licensing exam and equipping them to complete the required 1,500 clinical hours for licensure, including 300 hours gained during the program. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to teach, mentor, and contribute to the academic success of a diverse graduate student body.

The selected candidate will join a collaborative and distinguished faculty team and engage with a diverse graduate student body beginning September 1st, 2025. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the academic and professional success of students while fostering program growth. Candidates possessing both LMFT and a specialized focus such as sex therapy certification, environmental, epistemic or social justice, critical mental health, systemic practice development in the age of AI, collective trauma, systemic supervision, etc. are especially encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the capacity to deliver courses tailored to the diverse needs of students in the marriage and family therapy program while helping grow enrollment, especially among international students. . The position is based at Mercy’s Dobbs Ferry-Westchester Campus, with some teaching opportunities at the Manhattan Campus and online.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Develop and teach graduate-level courses in Marriage and Family Therapy, with a focus on systemic theories of psychotherapy

  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation efforts with an emphasis on promoting inclusivity and access

  • Clinic Development: Engage in the development of an online MFT clinic to ensure students receive a top-tier education

  • Student Recruitment & Admissions: Play a pivotal role in selecting future MFT professionals who grow the field of systemic-relational practice by attending open houses and develop recruitment pathways via community engagement

  • Mentorship and Advisement: Cultivate a culture of curiosity for growth and student development, nurturing their potential, supporting their academic and professional growth, particularly those from socially marginalized backgrounds

  • Engage in scholarly or professional development activities to stay current in the field

  • Innovation: Develop new systemic initiatives fostering growth and collaboration within the program, University and beyond

  • Participate in departmental, school, and university committees and events. Contribute to departmental and school-wide initiatives within the School of Behavioral Sciences that enhance equity, inclusion and innovation

  • Work with the students and NY’s Family Team leader to foster a culture of legislative action

  • Maintain licensure and uphold professional standards in Marriage and Family Therapy

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work Experience

  • Experience teaching in-person. Experience teaching online is a plus

  • Experience providing clinical supervision in higher education or agency for at least three to five years

  • Demonstrate teaching excellence and a commitment to equitable education in both in-person and online

  • Evidence of supporting learner success and a commitment to quality teaching outcomes

  • Ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community

  • Demonstrated commitment to service and currency in the field

  • Maintains current clinical or community practice in the field

  • Experience of team engagement and leadership (initiative-taking)

  • Experience presenting at professional conferences on a national, regional, and/or local level

  • Experience with scholarly writing using APA style

Qualifications

Education:An earned doctoral degree (or conferred by Summer 2025) from an accredited institution in Marriage and Family Therapy, a COAMFTE accredited degree is preferred, or a related doctoral degree from an accredited institution may be considered.

Experience:Ideally, possess a minimum of five years' experience in marriage and family therapy practice; at least three years post licensure. Experience desired in programmatic or policy collaboration with community partners and stakeholders.

Socio-cultural Commitment:A strong commitment to promoting justice, equity, inclusion, and belonging in diverse educational and professional environments.

Active membership/affiliation with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is preferred

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations Required:

  • New York state Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist or license eligible

  • New York State Diagnostic Privilege holder or eligible

  • AAMFT Approved Supervisor or supervisor candidate

Desired:

  • Certified sex therapist or additional practice as sex therapist recommended.

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:

Deferred Compensation Plan

All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.

Defined Contribution Plan

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.
