Job Description

AECOM is seeking an energetic and motivated Traffic/ITS Engineer to support our services in the areas of traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and transportation systems management and operations (TSMO) in Detroit, MI. The successful candidate will provide a variety of traffic and ITS engineering services to key AECOM clients and projects while working closely with a range of local and national experts. The position will also provide on-site support to operations contracts with our clients located in southeast Michigan. Additionally, the position will support ITS, emerging technology and design projects from our office in Novi, MI. This successful candidate will bring a strong work ethic, sense of excitement, strong communication skills, and a desire to innovate in an emerging technology space within ITS.

This position is expected to begin immediately.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with our clients in-person at the client site, from AECOM offices, and from virtual/remote work environments based upon project needs

  • Provide traffic operations and engineering support for Traffic Operations Center projects

  • Conduct and execute technical work in the field of traffic engineering, ITS, and emerging technology

  • Utilize ITS and traffic signal systems to monitor, operate, and manage agency-owned traffic signal infrastructure in alignment with current TSMO practices and client policies

  • Develop traffic signal timings based upon agency and MMUTCD standards

  • Analyze traffic conditions using Arterial Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) as well as data-driven applications that use Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM)

  • Utilize traffic signal controller firmware to adjust traffic signal timing parameters and develop in-field applications

  • Conduct field work to monitor operations and adjust traffic signal timings, including configuring/troubleshooting traffic signal equipment per agency and MMUTCD standards

  • Support technology-forward projects by reviewing vendor technology offerings and developing architectures and plans for successful integration into existing agency deployments, operations, and daily workflows

  • Support development of signal design plans through use of MMUTCD standards in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) environments

  • Produce a variety of technical memos, reports, and presentations supporting our clients including presentation to clients or peers in formal and informal settings

  • Provide engineering and technical services in support of other AECOM projects

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and two (2) years of relevant experience OR demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Motor vehicle licensure and check required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with traffic signal controller firmware, advanced transportation management system software, and/or vehicle and pedestrian detection systems

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Experience in traffic signal and/or intelligent transportation systems (ITS) design plans

  • Experience in transportations systems management and operations (TSMO)

  • Familiarity with traffic analysis software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, Highway Capacity Software and/or VISSIM

  • Knowledge of automated traffic signal performance (ATSPM) metric applications

  • Familiarity with CAD and plan review software including AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and/or MicroStation

  • Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate technical traffic and ITS concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to work independently and complete routine tasks without supervision

Additional Information

  • Relocation is not available for this position

  • Offered rate of compensation (Michigan location only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.

  • As part of the application to this position, candidates must also submit a technical writing sample from the past two years

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $63,000.00 - $105,000.00.
