Senior Research Compliance Specialist, Division of Research & Innovation

Position Purpose:

Maintains compliance and education program for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), investigators, and laboratory staff. Works closely with IACUC administrative office staff as well as the senior director and attending veterinarian from the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR), and other DLAR veterinarians and support staff to ensure that animal research at WSU is in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as University policy. Works closely with the Associate Director, Responsible Conduct of Research, and reports directly to the Vice President of Research Integrity who is the Institutional Official for the IACUC.

Essential Functions:

Maintain a post-approval monitoring program, with visits to all approved animal research laboratories each year. Conduct post-approval monitoring visits to animal research laboratories. Report incidents of non-compliance to the IACUC.

Assist the IACUC in investigating reports of non-compliance and other adverse events and report these to the IACUC as appropriate. Maintain a computerized database and log of such incidents, their outcomes, and any reports made to regulatory agencies. Work with appropriate DLAR personnel as needed to investigate situations involving veterinary care or animal procedures.

Provide educational materials and presentations to investigators and laboratory staff and serve as a resource to investigators as well as to animal husbandry staff on regulatory issues. Coordinate educational activities as appropriate with DLAR training personnel and activities.

Assist research compliance specialists in other regulatory areas, such as the Institutional Review Board (IRB), as needed and when it is feasible.

Develop and update IACUC compliance policies and procedures as needed. Stay up to date on changes in regulations and other standard practices in laboratory animal welfare.

Serve as liaison with related regulatory committees such as Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Radiation Safety, as well as the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS).

Serve as liaison with Veterans Administration (VA) Research Office.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree

Master’s degree from an accredited university in basic or applied sciences; doctoral degree is preferred.

Experience: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience).

Minimum 5 years management experience in laboratory animal research and interaction with IACUC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Familiarity with laboratory animal welfare regulations and IACUC operations.

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with investigators, laboratory staff, veterinarians, and DLAR staff.

Strong organizational skills and ability to work under minimal supervision. Strong analytical skills including critical thinking and complex problem solving.

Ability to develop policies, processes and forms as needed.

Proficiency with computerized database entry and management.
