Research Assistant (Healthy Homes and Environment Projects)

Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedResearch Assistant (Healthy Homes and Environment Projects)at its Detroit campus location.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee the implementation of several key research and intervention projects regarding Healthy Homes in Detroit, including:

    Train and supervise fieldwork staff on data collection procedures.

    Coordinate and conduct field work (i.e., home visits, door-to-door) and data collection procedures, including the installation of indoor and outdoor air monitors.

    Perform oversight of data entry and data processing, data audit/verification, and basic data analysis.

    Recruit participants for projects (via in-person events, neighborhood flyering, or telephone recruitment) and organize community engagement events.

  • · Develop data collection and survey instruments and manage and supervise the construction and maintenance of databases.

  • · Collaborate with others regarding data management, and in the planning and implementation of data quality assurance plans.

  • Assist in the preparation of articles for consideration in refereed journals on an ongoing basis.

  • Prepare regular updates to project team members on program progress, and to Center leadership.

  • Communicate reliably, clearly, and effectively with project team members and community partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • ABachelor’s degreein the social sciences (including public health, political science, public administration, demography, education, geography, psychology, social work, sociology, survey methodology, statistics, and/or urban studies),required.

  • Experience in working in the community on intervention research projects (including conducting site visits and healthy homes assessments), especially Detroit, isrequired.

  • Ability to drive and having access to a vehicle isrequired.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google products (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Forms, Calendar, etc.).

  • Experience with Qualtrics and survey instruments preferred.

  • W orking knowledge of social science research methods and primary data collection procedures and practicalities of implementation preferred.

  • Must be confident communicating through virtual channels with team members and others.

  • Knowledge of WiFi-connected devices and setting them up under field conditions highly preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A strong working knowledge of social science research methods and experience in managing primary data collection procedures and practicalities of implementation required.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks independently; strong organizational and problem-resolution skills; detail-oriented.

  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines.

  • Skilled at designing and implementing data collection tools, including survey instruments to conduct primary data collection.

  • Ability to contribute to several projects simultaneously, prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Flexible and adaptable style; a professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.

  • Strong diplomatic skills to present, and to answer questions and concerns effectively.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
