Description
The position of Vehicle Identification Technician works under direct supervision of the Detroit Police Department Commercial Auto Theft Section and is primarily responsible for examining and identifying vehicles which have missing, altered, or unreadable Public Vehicle Identification Numbers. The Vehicle Identification Technician will work with members of the Detroit Police Commercial Auto Theft Section and will be able to identify vehicles at city impound lots, private impound lots, and scenes in and around the city of Detroit. The duties associated with the assignment are as follows:
Examples of Duties
Identify vehicles, boats, and trailers
Crawl under vehicles when needed
Move doors, wheels, trim, headliners, and other vehicle parts at a scene to identify vehicles
Complete inspections of vehicles and complete appropriate State of Michigan paperwork
Complete paperwork and manage assigned radio to communicate with dispatch
Communicate with DPD Officers at the scene
Complete reports outlining the identification of vehicles
Testify in court to findings
Perform other duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications
The desired candidate must possess one (1) year or more of experience in the area of the applied position. The skills, knowledge and minimum qualifications required for this position, are skills commensurate with the competition of a high school education.
The Desired candidate must possess a Valid Michigan Driver’s License and maintain a driving recorded that is in accordance to the Detroit Police Department standards to operate Department Vehicles prior to and throughout employment with the Detroit Police Department.
Supplemental Information
Employees in this position must have:
Knowledge of local and state laws regarding VIN inspections and auto theft.
Knowledge of auto theft investigations.
Skill in operating equipment including computer terminal, printer, camera, and power tools.
Ability to perform minor mechanical work.
Special Note: This is an at-will appointment, and the candidate selected serves at the pleasure of the Chief of Police.
Candidates will be required to undergo a full criminal background check prior to execution of contractual agreement or hiring.
Medical Plan Offering for Administrative Special Services Employees
The City of Detroit is pleased to continue to provide a medical plan option to our Administrative Special Services Employees for the 2020 plan year. This plan is provided by Blue Care Network of Michigan and utilizes their PCP Focus Network. This plan provides you with the opportunity to receive an enhanced level of benefits and pay less out of your paycheck for your medical plan. There are two important requirements that you should consider and understand if you should decide to enroll in this plan. You will have to choose a primary care physician that serves within the PCP Focus network. This primary care physician coordinates your care. The network includes over 22,000 Primary Care Physicians. There are also Wellness Requirements that you (the subscriber) must meet in order to remain in the enhanced level of benefit.
Administrative Special Services Staff (Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:
CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.
VACATION – Granted (1) day per pay period, not to exceed 20 days per fiscal year
PAID HOLIDAYS – Granted if paid for 600 straight time hours in the (12) months prior to the holiday
MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT - Granted on same basis as regular employees.
WORKERS COMPENSATION – Covered by applicable laws.
UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION - Covered by applicable laws.
HOSPITALIZATION – You are eligible to purchase healthcare benefits for yourself and your dependents under a group rate. You will be responsible for the full premium, no employer contribution will be applied. Please review the Health Care Plan Options Booklet for more detailed information.
This position is not eligible for the City Pension Plan, dental, vision, optical, death, life, disability, funeral, reserve sick or jury duty.
Administrative Special Services Staff (Non-Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:
CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) Day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.
VACATION – Granted on the following basis:
