Job Description

The State Library of Iowa seeks to hire a part-time, temporary Masters-level Social Work Group Facilitator for a grant-funded program focused on preparing public library staff and administrators to work with high-needs patrons, including patrons who have mental health problems, substance use disorders, housing instability, and poverty-related needs. This program has two main components, 1) increasing education for public library staff and administrators about how best to support and serve high-needs patrons and 2) providing mental health support for library staff to help them cope with work-related stress.

The Social Work Group Facilitator will be responsible for facilitating six bimonthly support groups (12 meetings per month) with staff focused on processing and coping with work-related stress, building skills to increase resilience, applying reflective practice strategies, and developing strategies for self-care. Two of these groups will be specifically for urban library staff, two for rural library staff, one for urban library administrators, and one for rural library administrators. The Social Work Group Facilitator will also become certified as an adult and youth Mental Health First Aid trainer (facilitator training costs will be paid by the State Library) and facilitate at least 20 Mental Health First Aid trainings with library staff over a two-year period. Approximately ten of these trainings will be offered remotely via Zoom and ten will be offered in-person.

The position will begin this summer and continue through the end of the grant period (July 2026), pending satisfactory performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The person selected for this position will be responsible for:

  • Completing training with the project’s social work consultant on library patron and staff needs, current strategies for addressing these needs, and updated research related to these topics

  • Maintaining a support group waiting list and inviting new participants to join when there are group vacancies

  • Completing Mental Health First Aid facilitator training and meeting requirements for certification with this program

  • Providing Mental Health First Aid classes to library staff and administrators in both virtual and in-person formats (occasional in-state travel required for these classes)

  • Assisting with data collection for evaluation of the project, including tracking attendance of group participants to examine attendance and retention as well as distributing electronic surveys to participants according to the evaluation schedule

  • Collaborating with the project team to develop a guide for other library systems attempting to design similar support group interventions for library staff
