Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

PROSECUTING ATTORNEYS TRAINING COORDINATOR

Attorney General Brenna Bird is accepting applications for a Coordinator to perform the duties specified pursuant to Iowa Code Section 13A whose main function is to keep the prosecuting attorneys of the state informed of all changes in law and matters pertaining to their office and to maintain a uniform system of conduct, duty and procedure is established in each county of the state.

Appointed by the Attorney General and with the advice and consent of the Prosecuting Attorneys Training Coordination Counsel this is a 4-year term renewable term.

Description

As the Coordinator you will:

  • Serve as Executive Director of the Iowa County Attorneys Association to encourage and maintain close coordination among county attorneys and the Attorney General’s Office and to promote the uniform and efficient administration of the criminal justice system;

  • Supervise, organize, and meet with the various committees of the Iowa County Attorneys Association and give guidance to prosecutors;

  • Administer GTSB grant funds provided through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau to perform established contract conditions for the education and training of prosecutors and law enforcement personnel statewide;

  • Monitor and review cases and new legislation, prepare memoranda or bulletins, and communicate advice to all county attorneys and their assistants regarding developments in the law;

  • Exercise responsibility for the development, preparation and presentation of education training conferences for all Iowa prosecuting attorneys and some law enforcement personnel;

  • Delegate work within the division to PATC staff and manages PATC staff;

  • Administer the Attorney General’s asset forfeiture program established by Iowa Code Chapter 809A which collects 10% of cash proceeds for the AGs office, facilitates transfer of forfeited vehicles, and return 90% of cash proceeds to law enforcement agencies for the enhancement of public safety.

Requirements and Preferences

Candidates must have a passion for public service and criminal prosecution. The most competitive candidates will have experience as an elected county attorney. This position requires a license, or the ability to obtain a license, to practice law in Iowa.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited law school and five years of successful and responsible experience in the practice of law;

OR

three years of experience in the practice of law in the Department of Justice is considered as qualifying experience.
