Barr Engineering Co. Geotechnical Engineer - Senior Level (Hybrid) in Denver, Colorado

Job Description:

Summary: The person in this position will be part of an innovative and collaborative geotechnical engineering team of over 90 geotechnical engineers and geologists. Barr's geotechnical engineering team serves the fuels, mining, power, and public sectors. We provide a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, geohazard assessments, and groundwater and seepage.

The person in this position will work on a variety of geotechnical projects that involve traditional geotechnical and civil analysis and design related to shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, and earth retention with an emphasis on mine tailing's storage facilities and water retention dams. Additionally, this role involves supporting, growing, and building a dynamic team to expand Barr's Western U.S. dams practice.

Key responsibilities:

Perform engineering investigation and design support tasks from the conceptual phase through design with an emphasis on tailings storage facilities and water dams

Manage geotechnical field investigations; coordinate and assign laboratory testing programs; analyze field and lab data; and contribute to the preparation of comprehensive geotechnical reports

Provide support for feasibility studies, long-term planning, design, construction, operations, performance monitoring, dam safety inspections and reviews, and dam breach analyses

Prepare proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations and design work

Perform occasional fieldwork such as construction observation and dam safety inspections

Provide support through training/mentorship for other geotechnical engineers

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement business development strategies

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis

10 years of related work experience

Previous proficiency in geotechnical software such as Geostudio (Seep/W, Slope/W, Sigma/W), Rocscience Slide

Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain within one year with eligibility to procure licensure in other states/jurisdictions

Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design disciplines

Proven history of developing a portfolio of business and providing exceptional client service

Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs

Willingness and ability to regularly travel to meet client needs particularly for on-site client meetings and field mentoring

Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering (MS or PhD)

15 years of geotechnical design experience

Experience in the investigation, design, and construction of earthen dams

Experience with various aspects of tailings management, from concept, design, and operation and through closure

Experience as EOR, DEOR (tailings), SME, or IC

Experience with geotechnical monitoring equipment familiarity/understanding of USACE, FERC, FEMA, USBR, ICOLD standards for design

Experience working on mine sites with an emphasis on safety

Experience with numerical modeling with FLAC/PLAXIS, Muk3D, Leapfrog, OpenGround, Landform Evolution Models
