DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has vacancies for two Engineer-in-Training (EIT) positions in the Traffic & Safety unit at our Denver location. One position will focus on learning engineering design for traffic control through work zones, signalized intersections, and permanent installations on state highways, as well as learn basic design of safety improvement for rural and urban highways. Another position will focus on learning how to apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards to construction inspection/oversight on highway projects.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Learn to review plans and specifications to identify problems with constructability, potential claims for additional costs and delays, and negative impacts to the public, local industry, and environment. Learn to recommend changes to minimize potential costs and delays. Conduct inspections of construction project work including field observation, testing of materials in accordance with established Colorado and industry testing procedures, and measuring and documenting work and quantities. Learn to prepare and design engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roadway construction projects. Ensure quality and consistency of project design plans and procedures by applying good engineering judgment and a wide variety of design and construction manuals, spreadsheets, forms, design aids, computer software, and department procedures. Learn to document and approve progress and final contract payments due for work completed and accepted; review pay documentation prepared by staff and oversee and check cumulative payment reports as well as authorizations complied by computer programs. Learn to ensure contract compliance with plans and specifications by monitoring and documenting the contractor's work during construction. Assist with drafting change orders and minor contract revisions. Check calculations and tabulated quantities summarized in the plan sheets. Assist with preparing project pay estimates, schedules, and other project documentation Assist with maintaining official project records and ensure project files are properly placed in latest document database. Assist the project manager on design and construction projects to gain experience in all aspects of contract and project administration. Attend training to develop and improve engineering skills and background. Abide by all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment. Communicate and correspond with other departments or disciplines within CDOT, federal, state, local agencies, consultants, contractors, utilities, and the public regarding changes or information that have an impact upon them.
