Urban Peak Assistant Kitchen Manager in Denver, Colorado

Under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager, the Assistant Kitchen Manager will be responsible for implementation of meals, food pantries, and cooking classes, as well as ongoing kitchen cleanliness, maintenance, and safety. The additional task of this position is to form relationships with Urban Peak clients in order to empower them on their path to self-sufficiency. The holistic well-being of youth experiencing homelessness is jeopardized by a lack of access to nutritious food options. In light of this, the Assistant Kitchen Manager acts as a liaison to advocate for healthy, sustainable food choices for the youth who access Urban Peak services through the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals throughout Urban Peak's campus. This is accomplished through oversight of meal volunteers, maintaining a clean and functional kitchen, creatively cultivating healthy menu options, and engaging youth in the cooking process through volunteer and employment opportunities. The Assistant Kitchen Manager works as part of the Kitchen team to coordinate food services for Urban Peak youth.

Who You Are:

Three (3) years of culinary experience in a commercial kitchen or catering for large groups and/or related educational background. Lived experience reflective of the youth we serve strongly encouraged but not required Experience working with USDA or other funding that regulates food distribution, preferred but not required Experience working with managing volunteers and community partnerships Experience or education in areas of health and nutrition Fluency in Spanish preferred, but not required The ability to connect well, work effectively and communicate in a culturally responsive manner with a diverse youth population. An understanding of trauma informed care and harm reduction principles, and an ability to implement these approaches. Ability to handle multiple tasks and to assess and change priorities based upon agency and client needs, in an environment that sometimes includes interpersonal conflict and chaos. Confidence in timely and accurate data collection (this position will utilize Salesforce) Skill in operating office equipment, such as computers, software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Outlook; Teams) and telephones (including ring central platform). Skill in mediating and de-escalating, particularly in sensitive situations. Able to make sound decisions, using available information while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. Able to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team and work with collaborating agencies. Must be team-oriented and able to coordinate with various departments and staff. Must be insurable as a driver on Urban Peak's auto liability policy to transport youth using an Urban Peak vehicle and an approved personal vehicle. Ability to use second language in written and verbal communication desired (Spanish, Vietnamese, ASL). Must pass both federal and state background checks. Must pass pre-employment TB screening.

What You Will Do:

Food Access and Cooking Classes

Prep, cook, and serve food in a responsible and efficient manner. Maintain kitchen cleanliness standards before, during, and after meals. Ensure anyone in the kitchen is adhering to safe food service practices. Engage youth in cooking through volunteer opportunities, employment opportunities, and/or cooking classes. Facilitate a minimum of two cooking classes per week.

Kitchen Oversight and Documentation

Point person for scheduled routine kitchen maintenance. Ensure the kitchen remains up to safety and cleanliness standards. Responsible for prepping for any visits from Health Department, Licensing, and/or USDA. Maintain temperature log of fridge, freezer, and dry storage temps. Provide meal volunteers with an orientation and support throughout their shift. Document youth attendance for meals and cooking classes. Gather volunteer waivers from meal voluntee s. Responsible for safe, organized, and efficient storage of food donations and deliveries.

What We Offer:

Salary Range: $53,000 to $55,000 Shift: TBD This is a full-time position that may include day, evening and weekend hours in an assigned schedule, as well as mandatory coverage for several holiday shifts annually.
