FAVER Animal Care Technician in Decatur, Georgia

[Position Summary]{.underline} The Atlanta VA Health Care System Veterinary Medical Unit is looking for an Animal Care Technician, that will ensure the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals. The incumbent will actively support VA research programs by contributing to the care and upkeep of animals housed in the facility. The position will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following: Performing basic husbandry duties, such as cleaning/sanitizing caging and accessory equipment; sanitizing/decontaminating all work areas; perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on cage washers/autoclaves; cross train to observe animals and provide husbandry, report abnormalities to Supervisor and/or Veterinarian; monitor and maintain inventory and stock for assigned areas; and, perform accurate data collection/reporting. The work involves moderate risks which require special safety precautions. The heavy racks and pressure washers used in the facility must be handled with caution, as must the cleaning chemicals. In addition, the incumbent must be able to follow SOPs formulated for cleaning animals infected experimentally with potentially hazardous agents. Although there are risks in the animal facility, they are controlled risks which are subject to control with proper safety practices. The work requires regular and protracted periods of strenuous physical exertion such as carrying or lifting heavy physical objects, such as stacks of plastic cages or metal bar lids, manipulating heavy bedding pans, pushing large metal racks on casters, and other similar tasks. The incumbent is expected to ask for assistance when objects heavier than 40 pounds must be lifted. Safety is of paramount importance in the animal facility.

[Job Functions]{.underline} Function 1 (40%):Cleaning/ sanitizing caging and accessory equipment, monitor and maintain inventory and stock for assigned areas. Sanitizing/ decontaminating work areas. Perform accurate data collection and reporting. Function 2 (40%):Regularly observe animals and provide husbandry. Report abnormalities to Supervisor and/or Veterinarian. Administer treatments as directed. Function 3 (20%):Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on cage washers/ autoclaves and other facility equipment.

Other Functions: May monitor or maintain budgets and grants, assist with budget development, and prepare related expense reports and reimbursements.

[MinimumRequirements]{.underline} Education:High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:Experience with animal care, facility and cage wash operations is helpful but not required.

Specific Skills:Animal care background and/or experience as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician is preferred, but not required.AALAS certification preferred, but not required.
