We are seeking power systems/engineering Co-op engineers to join the AES US Utilities - T&D Standards & Innovation team, where they will play a pivotal role in supporting DOE awarded projects/applications focused on grid protection & control technologies, grid operation & planning modeling & simulation, and grid analytics & optimization on DERs & EVs, in addition to regular works associated with equipment specifications, engineering & design practices, and construction standards. This team collaborates with AES and various industry partners, aiming to support the grid of the future with increasing inverter-based resources (e.g., wind, solar, storage, DERs) and electrifications (e.g., EVs, data centers), to be more reliable, sustainable, and affordable. We use the best available technologies to address emerging challenges and it's a great opportunity to contribute to the transformation of the energy sector and make a significant impact on our sustainable future. QUALIFICATIONS: A second-year Master or PhD student or higher is preferred. Students must hold an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. Strong academic background, outstanding attention to detail, and organization and presentation skills. Familiarity with power flow equations, symmetrical components, and power system stability is strongly recommended. Proficiency in power system analysis and control simulation software is also helpful. Proficiency in at least one of the popular computer programming languages is required. RESPONSIBILITIES: Support the development of new protection and control technologies for future grids with increasing inverter-based renewables and storage. Develop hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing plans and models for protective relays, controllers, and sensors. Investigate and deploy communication platforms and protocols for centralized and edge control applications. Conduct power system analysis using software like PSSE, PSCAD, CYME, DSA Tools, and ASPEN/CAPE. Develop statistical and analytical models to predict power system parameters. Analyze grid-enhancing technologies and their applications. Assist with new equipment and technology evaluations, tests, pilots, and standardization. Prepare and present technical papers/reports.
