The Amazon Aviation Security (AvSec) team is seeking an enthusiastic, Sr. Manager of AvSec to provide leadership, support, and oversight for Amazon Air’s (AIR) cargo transportation business. The Sr. Manager of AvSec will be responsible for driving new initiatives for the transportation supply chain involving Amazon owned and third-party (3P) delivery methods. This includes managing risk-based security standards and ensuring compliance with both corporate policies, federal regulations and standardized processes. The Sr. Manager of AvSec serves as the interface between AIR and AvSec leadership, and will be responsible for identifying, reporting, and leading the correction of non-compliances and deficiencies. The successful candidate will serve as a point of contact for regulatory engagement, ensure compliance with established security policies and procedures as well as develop and improve processes to ensure operational integrity, owning goals and performance targets for their respective region.

This key role will support the AIR operation programs with understanding, implementing, and validating security requirements, to ensure employees, 3P vendors, visitors, and assets (people, property, and data) are secure and that the organization is prepared to properly respond to various security related emergencies. The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to utilize their security expertise and management strength to challenge conventional wisdom, think strategically, communicate effectively, drive results and leverage the necessary technical support that will be provided by both Amazon and 3P technical experts.

Key job responsibilities

The Sr. Manager of AvSec’s responsibilities include prioritizing team resources and tasks in order to meet short-term process targets and team goals in an ambiguous environment. The Sr. Manager of AvSec will create, establish, and verify compliance with security procedures and regulatory standards, physical security design standards and policies and utilize Security Management Systems (SeMS) processes for risk mitigation where the strategy may not yet be defined. The successful candidate will develop new security standards and evaluate existing security standards by establishing workflows, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), operational excellence mechanisms, and will ensure customer outcomes are auditable, decisions are data-driven, and work quality is measurable.

This is a new and evolving business operation, and AvSec is looking for someone who can introduce best practices and grow as the team’s scale and scope expand.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Participate in short and long-term strategic initiatives.

• Provide guidance and support to the AIR Operations teams and business lines using aviation as a method of transportation.

• Collaborate with internal customers to develop security solutions to address evolving operational processes with a focus on identifying solutions that facilitate business objectives.

• Create strategic programs designed to enhance loss mitigation efforts within Air Cargo.

• Work with internal customers to establish, provide and agree on clear goals, objectives, and performance delivery outcomes and timelines.

• Support crisis management planning and emergency response for AIR, both 3P and Amazon owned assets.

• Establish and maintain relationships with the Airport Security Directors, Local Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Federal Security Directors, and Local U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Port Directors within your region, as well as local Federal Law Enforcement and Local Municipal Law Enforcement.

• Learn Amazon’s Customer Excellence System (ACES) and apply its concepts including; Lean Six Sigma and Kaizens so that system and related process waste is eliminated.

• Utilize Security Management Systems (SeMS) to identify root cause and develop mitigating processes to reduce risk.

• This role covers a 24/7 operation and you must be able to work all shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays shifts as necessary.

The Span of Authority for this role may include span of control between multiple facilities within a geographic region. This will include the hiring and development of team members, supporting operational leadership, managing complex problems, decisions and escalations, as well as, developing long-term risk mitigation and a path forward in difficult situations.

Eligibility Qualifications

• This role is regulated by the TSA and is subject to requirements imposed by the CBP because the role will require access to U.S. CBP-regulated areas. Successful candidates must therefore complete all screenings prescribed by the TSA and the U.S. CBP.

• Individuals hired into this position will have unescorted access privileges to airport security identification display areas (SIDA). For this reason, eligibility for this role will be limited to individuals who pass a security screening, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and TSA (as applicable).

• This position may be subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing. Federal law requires Amazon to determine an applicant's history of DOT drug and/or alcohol violation(s) or refusal(s) to test before hiring applicant into a safety-sensitive position.

• This position requires an employee’s full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute their job duties to ensure the safety and security of Amazon AIR personnel, third-party contractors, Airport personnel, cargo, and equipment. This position is therefore designated as a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and, where permitted, post-hire drug testing.

A day in the life

This role is responsible for developing “security as a service” solutions while ensuring all aspects of regulatory compliance are adhered to as outlined by the respective regulators by geography. The successful candidate will work with internal and external teams to develop systemic solutions for the resilience of AIR Cargo products. They will also promote aviation security within all levels of our customer teams and manage relationships across Amazon’s support partners. The Sr. Manager of AvSec is a part of the site’s Sr. team, influencing decisions that impact operations, regulatory compliance and aviation security.

About the team

The AvSec team is responsible for security, loss prevention, and regulatory compliance at Amazon. The organization is built with four core pillars; Security Management Systems, Programs and Quality Assurance, Security Operations, and Credentialing. The organization is committed to identifying and mitigating risk to people, Amazon assets, Amazon brand and regulatory compliance through the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of best-in-class aviation security procedures, standards and guardrails between which Amazon operates. Those risks could impact Amazon’s brand, associates, customer data, and assets globally, and our guardrails must be effective and scalable. By supporting our customer teams at fulfillment centers and AIR sites to implement process improvements, mitigate risk, resolve equipment issues, and implement new processes to improve performance, AvSec contributes to safe and secure transportation of air cargo to our customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree or 7+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following disciplines; transportation/supply chain operations, business management/development or finance.

  • 5+ years in data analytics, reporting or financial accounting.

  • 5+ years of experience in a customer service driven environment or ecommerce business lines.

  • 5+ years of experience in operations planning or business strategy.

  • Experience with all Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field or MBA.

  • Strong leadership skills and knowledge; ability to influence change and drive desired outcomes in a matrixed organization.

  • Ability to independently manage through ambiguity and handle changing priorities, to effectively prioritize, multitask, and exercise good judgment.

  • Experience with physical security control and surveillance systems.

  • Experience with process improvements (Lean process, Kaizen, and/or Six Sigma).

  • Interviewing and Interrogation experience or workplace investigation certification (e.g. Wicklander-Zulawski certification).

  • Workplace Violence and/or Business Continuity.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $109,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
