The R&D Lab Technician is an entry-level contributor that works to provide a variety of support such as performing lab and quality control as well as inspecting product samples. This role will be responsible for executing experiments, maintaining lab equipment, and collaborating with the R&D team to achieve project objectives.

Primary Objective: Evaluate quality of glazes and raw materials to ensure final product meet specifications

  • Collect the necessary materials to prepare glaze samples for evaluation (tiles, glazes, raw materials from pilot plant to 2 nd floor lab)

  • Prepare glazes for testing (open 5gal buckets, mixing, adjust density, viscosity and disperse required materials)

  • Batch glaze formulas using lab and pilot plant equipment.

  • Prepare samples by Hand Spray or Skate, print testing patterns on samples

  • Request firing curves to kiln scheduler, load and pick up samples from kiln

  • Performs lab tests including, but not limited to, inspection of tile samples for gloss, color, texture, etc.

  • Assist with glaze trials at plant scale by setting glazes at testing conditions and collecting data/samples for evaluation

  • Prepare glaze samples for analytical testing

  • Documents test results.

  • Monitors equipment or processes and reports problems to supervisor.

  • Follows safety and standard operating procedures.

  • Keeps work area safe, clean, and organized.

Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Experience, Competencies and Supervision:

Education and Knowledge: High School diploma or equivalent experience.

Experience: 3-5 years previous ceramic lab experience.

Competencies: Good oral and written communications skills. Good record keeping skills. Good listening skills. Accurate measurement capability. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to understand and speak basic English. Ability to work in a safe and conscientious manner.
