Project Engineer

The Level I Project Engineer is responsible for the technical support associated with customer products, including quoting / planning and implementing new business, value engineering, production start-up / maintenance and continuous improvement programs.

Job Summary

This position reports to the Manager of Project Engineering and functions as the interface between our customers and our internal operations to ensure that all customer engineering requirements are met. The Project Engineer must be able to translate 3D Model Based Definition (MBD) and legacy drawing data into internal documents such as engineering models, production / quality plans and tool designs.

The Project Engineer Level I must be capable of managing projects and function successfully in a matrix organization. A Level I Project Engineer must be a self-starter, capable of managing several tasks simultaneously, balancing hands-on while interacting with other (internal and external) resources. Additionally, this position requires someone who is familiar with CATIA or other similar CAD Programs. This position will also require excellent communication skill. In this Level I position the candidate will present to customers, vendors and internal operations, including the senior management team. The understanding of overall aircraft design and functionality would be beneficial.

Essential Functions

· Function as the lead interface between customers and internal operations, ensuring that all customer requirements are translated, defined and incorporated into our business and manufacturing systems.

· Understand and Implement a Risk Management Assessment in support of Projects

· Prepare quotations from inquires, support Value Analysis (VA) Engineering, including improvements to producibility as well as continuous improvement efforts.

· Identify and manage tooling requirements, including forming, functional gauging and assembly fixtures.

· The Level I must be capable of performing the following activities associated with new product development and initial launch.

· Plan manufacturing operations to produce quality components.

· Create and maintain accurate Bill of Material (BOM) requirements.

· Update planning as required for customer engineering/purchase order changes or method improvement/correction type changes.

· Provide cost estimates to support Customer RFQ’s.

· Interface with customer and supplier engineering to coordinate engineering data and ensure proper flow down of customer requirements.

· Coordinate all tooling requirements including production rate tooling and projected tool life cycle expectations.

· Assist in Prioritizing project activities for supporting departments and outside suppliers.

· Define project schedules and establish major milestones. Track and update using Microsoft Project as required.

· Provide status of each project to the customer using an appropriate format and methodology.

· Work with the Project Engineering Manager in regard to establishing budget base lines.

· Assist in writing work instructions (SOP’s) to describe in detail the processing steps necessary to produce component or sub-assemblies.

· Coordinate and assist with First Article Inspection requirements.

· Coordinate information flow with other engineer team members to make corrections or improvements to planning, tooling, or processes.

· Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.

· Must be willing and able to work overtime as necessary.

· Acceptable attendance is an essential function of the position.

· Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position.

Physical Demands

· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk or sit.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

· Must be able to communicate effectively.

· Annual baseline hearing test is required.

· Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required

· Working conditions are: 80% office and 20% manufacturing environment.

· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.

· The noise level in the work environment is moderate and occasionally loud.

Skills & Qualifications

Qualifications

· Strong communication skills are required.

· Must be able to document and present project status to customers and management.

· Preferred Experience/Skill sets:

o This is an entry level engineering position; however, some shop environment experience is desirable.

o Demonstrated fluency in a CAD software system, preferably CATIA.

o Conversant in Microsoft Project, Excel and Power Point.

· Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma and Value Analysis (VA) Engineering, including design for manufacturability.

· Willingness to travel if necessary.

Required Experience/Education

· BS degree in Engineering required, preferably in a mechanical, aerospace, industrial or systems field.

· Working knowledge of aerospace manufacturing is desirable.
