Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill future part-time (approximately 4 hours per week per workshop) Temporary Craft Center Instructor positions for the Craft Center at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

The Craft Center Instructor plays a vital role in fostering creativity, artistic skill development, and community building within the Craft Center at Oregon State University. This position is responsible for developing and delivering high-quality workshops and classes in various artistic disciplines, including but not limited to ceramics, woodworking, jewelry making, textiles, and other crafts. The instructor will create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment where students of all skill levels feel a sense of belonging and connection through artistic exploration.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum Development (50%)

  • Develop and teach engaging, skill-appropriate craft workshops and classes tailored to beginners through advanced students.

  • Design structured lesson plans and project-based learning experiences that align with the Craft Center’s mission and meet the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Provide individualized instruction, constructive feedback, and hands-on demonstrations to enhance student learning.

  • Stay current with emerging craft trends, techniques, and materials, integrating them into class offerings.

Community Building (25%)

  • Foster an inclusive and supportive studio environment where all participants feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged to explore their creativity.

  • Cultivate a sense of community by facilitating opportunities for peer learning, collaboration, and artistic exchange among students.

  • Develop activities and programs that strengthen student connections, such as open studio sessions, collaborative projects, or informal gatherings.

  • Work with student employees, volunteers, and other instructors to ensure the Craft Center is a space where individuals feel a sense of belonging and creative ownership.

  • Participate in and support Craft Center events that celebrate student work and encourage social connections.

Studio Safety & Maintenance (20%)

  • Ensure proper and safe use of tools, equipment, and materials within the Craft Center.

  • Educate students on best practices for studio safety, including tool handling, material disposal, and workspace cleanliness.

  • Maintain an organized and functional studio environment, assisting with equipment upkeep and reporting maintenance needs.

Administrative Support (5%)

  • Track student attendance and learning progress, providing feedback as needed.

  • Assist with inventory management, including monitoring supply usage and ordering materials.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, professional development opportunities, and campus collaborations.

What You Will Need

  • Two years of experience teaching or instructing in a craft or artistic discipline.

  • Proficiency in at least one craft discipline (e.g., ceramics, woodworking, jewelry making, textiles).

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students of all skill levels.

  • Knowledge of studio safety protocols and best practices for equipment handling.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student population and campus partners.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • A bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art education, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience in a craft discipline may be considered.

  • Experience working in a university, community education, or studio setting.

  • Familiarity with program development, student mentorship, or community-building initiatives.

  • Experience supervising or mentoring student employees and volunteers.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • The employee in this position will often be required to lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds, and pushing and/or pulling carts weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • May encounter chemicals specific to craft.

  • Safely operate machinery and tools specific to their studio area of expertise.

  • The work environment can be noisy.
