Job Summary

The Center for Advocacy, Prevention and Education is seeking a Survivor Advocate. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ),12-month, professional faculty position.

The Advocate will provide confidential and legally privileged advocacy services (including safety planning, academic and housing accommodations, financial aid, accompaniment throughout reporting processes, emotional support, and other referral/resource) to students in the University community who have experienced gender-based violence: sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, stalking, and gender-based harassment and discrimination. CAPE Survivor Advocacy provides trauma-informed and survivor-centered care from an anti-oppressive and empowerment lens that addresses survivor autonomy and choice, the lived experiences of survivors arising out of their intersecting identities, and the community impacts of violence. The Advocate collaborates with campus and community partners to formulate strategies that best serve the survivor and the community.

The Advocate will work closely with the CAPE Survivor Advocacy Manager in supporting campus change by providing direct advocacy services & training for OSU students, faculty, and staff. This position will also educate the campus community about the integral role that each of us have in ending interpersonal violence and providing survivor centered responses to disclosures of violence.

Key Responsibilities

75% SURVIVOR ADVOCACY

  • Provides confidential advocacy services; informs survivors of their options, rights, and available resources. These efforts will be conducted through a social justice lens, understanding of working with culturally diverse students and traditionally marginalized groups.

  • Provides, develops, and enhances survivor-centered advocacy to those who have experienced complex or complicated interpersonal violence situations, including experiences that occurred prior to a student’s arrival to the university. Connects survivors to various campus and community entities providing services (such as Counseling and Psychological Services, University Housing and Dining, the Basic Needs Center, and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access); accompanies survivors as needed throughout reporting processes (Title IX, Equal Opportunity and Access, and law enforcement) and evidence collection exams; and directly provides academic and housing accommodations as needed. Advocates connect survivors to broader systems, and provide emotional support and care throughout the process.

  • Provides confidential advocacy support and referrals for the survivor’s loved ones in order to support efforts towards recovery.

  • Maintains confidential case files so that baseline statistics and trends can be determined and reported. Exercises sound judgment and the flexible use of advocacy skills, including when a survivor is in crisis. Works effectively within and outside of the university system in developing relationships and programs to address programmatic issues and needs.

15% TRAINING AND OUTREACH

  • Provides training and professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members to learn about advocacy services, responding to survivors, and overall trauma-informed practices. These programs will consist of workshops, outreach, multimedia, online, and other forms of training; including but not limited to awareness raising campaigns & tabling efforts.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with local community-based organizations to assist with advocacy and referral efforts.

10% SERVICE

  • Works collaboratively with other internal and external programs and units to reduce all forms of violence.

  • May serve on committees within Student Health Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, Sexual Assault Response Team, and other relevant university and community committees as delegated by the Manager for Survivor Advocacy Services.

What You Will Need

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field

  • 2 years’ experience at full time equivalency, working directly with survivors of interpersonal/gender-based violence, providing trauma informed care & working with underserved & marginalized communities or in a counseling related field

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and creating inclusive environments

  • Demonstrated understanding of current best practices in responding to interpersonal trauma

  • Demonstrated ability to work with people of various ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation and gender identities

  • Possess relevant state-wide certifications regarding advocacy training

  • Possess a driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle

  • Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment and make ethical decisions

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030 et seq. Offers of employment are contingent upon meeting all minimum qualifications including the motor vehicle check requirement.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field of study

  • Experience and competency serving in advocacy or counseling to underserved and traditionally marginalized student groups such as but not limited to LGBTQ+ communities, BIPOC students, international students, survivors with disabilities, first-generation survivors, survivors with high financial need

  • Experience working in a university setting

  • Experience speaking in front of diverse audiences and the ability to adapt materials quickly so that the audience can understand the concepts being presented.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • This position requires ability to drive students to off campus appointments.

  • Occasional after hours/weekend hours depending on need.
