Job Summary
The Department of Indigenous Natural Resources and DEI is seeking a Program Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.
This position manages the general operations of an ongoing research program in the College of Forestry by weaving together diverse elements of theIndigenous Natural Resource Office (https://www.forestry.oregonstate.edu/inro) ( INRO ) to create a cohesive program while serving as a resource for others regarding project-related activities. This position collaborates closely with Principal Investigators, other research staff, and students on various project elements within the scope of theTraditional Ecological Knowledge ( TEK ) Lab (https://tek.forestry.oregonstate.edu/tek-lab-projects) and INRO program, with the potential for expanding work to other projects over time. Currently funded projects include:
PNW Tribal Forest Restoration & Native Seed Project:a partnership program between the TEK Lab, the BLM , and Tribal Nations that seeks to implement DOI National Seed Strategy and Plant Conservation and Restoration Program protocols to collect seeds of culturally and ecologically significant plants. The program aims to employ and train Tribal youth in STEM and co-create ecocultural restoration plans.
Tribal Roundtables: a program to investigate scalable models to decolonize the Tribal consultation process in defining mature and old-growth forests and to consider active adaptive management that incorporates all ways of knowing, including Indigenous Knowledge (IK).
Additional Federal Agency partnership initiatives that develop
The incumbent works with the Primary and Co-Investigators and other research staff to coordinate and manage lab processes and staffing, fieldwork logistics, and budgets related to research activities for the above programs. The incumbent leads communication activities and program promotion and assists in coordinating related personnel activities.

Key Responsibilities
50% Management of Research Operations
Responsible for the management and safety of the TEK Lab, including ensuring equipment and facilities are maintained, proper safety protocols are followed so that research is conducted with the highest level of scientific integrity.
Tracks projects to ensure timely completion of reports and deliverables.
Trains staff on field and laboratory techniques and processes.
Provides logistical support to co-Principal Investigators, graduate students, and field crews in coordination with INRO Administrative Assistant; ensures vehicles and housing are reserved; initiates and manages accounts with local businesses for supplies; and provides field crews with logistical plans and emergency support. Drive to/from field sites as necessary to provide coordination and logistical support.
20% Financial Management
Manages budgets for large, multi-investigator research projects.
Works with the College of Forestry Business office to develop and track personal service contracts for external vendors.
Acts as internal liaison between PIs, OSU Financial Strategic Services Office, and OSU Research Office.
Assists with purchasing equipment and supplies for project personnel.
Assists in identifying opportunities for containing costs and ensuring compliance with policies.
Monitors expenses and informs PIs of current balances, budget issues, spending, or policy issues.
10% Subject Matter Expert for Effective Collaboration with Tribal Nations
Help to create an environment that is welcoming for Tribal interns to learn STEM within the context of Indigenous Knowledge and incorporate cultural elements specific to Tribal Nations (e.g., ethnobotany) into the field experience of the Tribal interns.
Utilize knowledge of Tribal resources to help with field data collection and meetings with community members.
Support and be involved in outreach efforts, such as attending Tribal events, facilitating media communications, and collaborating with the OSU Foundation.
Support staff and students in the INRO to develop their understanding of respectful and effective collaboration and communication methods with Tribal Nations and peoples.
10% Supervision
Supervise undergraduate interns; serve as lead to Native American fellows and graduate students engaged in TEK Lab research and training.
Select, hire, train, supervise, schedule, review work, evaluate, and establish goals for field and lab staff.
Assists with hiring field staff, including developing and posting job advertisements, responding to inquiries, managing applications, onboarding successful applicants, and managing timesheets.
10% Service
Participate in INRO , TEK , and College of Forestry meetings and events as an engaged community member.
Contribute to and assist in building a culture of collegiality, open communication, shared responsibility, and curiosity in the INRO and TEK lab.

What You Will Need
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources, social sciences, ecology, or related field.
Expertise in IK, including ethnobotany (ecology and uses of culturally significant plants), use of cultural burning, traditional land uses, and knowledge of ecocultural restoration.
Demonstrated awareness of and respect for Native American cultures and their values and knowledge of the practices and processes specific to the operations of tribal governments’ research partnerships.
Evidence of ability to build relationships with various stakeholders with differing viewpoints in pursuit of shared goals.
Laboratory and fieldwork experience in a related field.
Demonstrated expertise in effective use of the Microsoft suite of programs.
Demonstrated strong teamwork skills to facilitate effective and diplomatic interactions with others.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of ethical and professional standard of conduct.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
Advanced degree in forestry, natural resources, botanical sciences, or related field.
Experience providing support for large-scale research projects.
Experience in research program management and/or biological laboratory management.
Experience working on Indigenous lands and with Indigenous peoples on natural resource projects.
Experience managing and tracking budgets and accounts.
Supervisory experience.
Experience serving as a cultural liaison or bridge, or facilitating consultation between Tribal Nations and other government or non-government organizations and agencies.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Primary office setting M-F from 8:00-5:00. Travel to field sites will be required during summer field seasons (July-August) as part of logistical support to seasonal field crews. This may require hiking on rough terrain in all weather conditions and carrying up to forty pounds of supplies to provide logistical support to crews. May require working on weekends or evenings to support cultural activities.
