Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time, 10-month, Food Service Worker 3 position for University Housing and Dining Services at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

UHDS recognizes the importance of learning both in and out of the classroom, and supports the concept of education as an individual as well as a community experience. UHDS strives to provide students, faculty, staff, and guests with safe, economical, convenient, and comfortable living and dining options, and the department works to maintain the highest educational and service standards. UHDS houses over 4,800 students and offers a variety of living and dining options in 15 residence halls, three dining centers, 10-14 retail and coffee shop locations across campus, a market, and a limited number of family apartments. UHDS is an auxiliary enterprise which is funded solely by customers who use our services — we receive no State or General fund allocation.

PURPOSE : the purpose of this position is to perform a variety of food preparation and food service activities, including lead worker responsibilities for a restaurant concept. This position will work with and assist the manager of these locations to establish and implement guidelines within the unit, and to maintain established focus on customer care, student employee development and product quality. This position will potentially serve as a back-up person for the delivery of food and beverage items into access-secured residence halls, where there may be minors present; and/or this position may need to regularly access storage areas in a residence hall without an escort. These security sensitive tasks will require passing a CHC .

Key Responsibilities

50% SERVE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMERS IN A PROMPT , COURTEOUS MANNER .

  • Greet customers with a smile and make eye contact. Serve customers in a timely fashion, (2-5 minutes,) promote sales, and maintain a positive attitude. Prepare food and drink products for sale. Preparation includes using kitchen equipment. Assemble and heat/cook menu items. Follow recipes for food production.

  • Operate a cash register, make change in exchange for goods, receive monies and process card purchases. Verify cash balance at beginning and end of shift.

  • Perform routine food service duties, e.g. serving prepared foods, stocking shelves, rotating stock, and pricing merchandise.

  • Keep concept stocked and organized, retrieve stock from warehouse regularly to ensure shelves are kept full and a wide variety is offered, use time effectively and efficiently.

15% MAINTAIN ESTABLISHED HIGH STANDARDS OF SERVICE , QUALITY AND COST AWARENESS .

  • Properly care for equipment. Advise supervisor when repairs become necessary.

  • Attractively display and serve food products. Rotate and properly store food and beverage products. Record date utilized in forecasting of product use in order to maintain a par inventory. Use leftover products in a prompt manner to maintain quality.

15% PERFORM LEAD WORK DUTIES .

  • Train a diverse student workforce from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, utilizing guidelines and standards.

  • Assist in the preparation of schedules and perform necessary schedule changes with management approval. Recommend staffing needs and changes to manager.

  • Plan work, assign work, oversee and schedule breaks, and provide for appropriate coverage during the shift.

  • Report disciplinary and performance issues to manager.

  • Ensure dress code standards are followed.

  • Ensure security of unit.

  • Ensure that open and closing procedures are followed.

10% MAINTAIN A CLEAN , SANITARY OPERATION BY PERFORMING ESTABLISHED CLEANING DUTIES FOLLOWING ALL HEALTH DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES FOR SAFE FOOD HANDLING PROCEDURES .

  • Prepare proper sanitation solution and change out every two hours, or more often if needed. Maintain temperature logs regularly.

  • Clean equipment according to specifications. Clean and sanitize counter areas, tables and equipment on a regular basis.

  • Sweep floors and dispose of trash as necessary. Ensure unit is clean and sanitized, floor is swept and mopped, and trash is out at the end of each shift.

5% SUPPLY INVENTORY RESPONSIBILITIES .

  • Receive warehouse deliveries and put away. Stock storage areas to keep full at all times. Maintain cups and other supplies in service area. Notify supervisor when supplies are low.

5% MISCELLANEOUS

  • This position will use a computer to check work schedule, complete time sheets, complete online forms, and check employer provided email. Other duties as assigned.

What We Require

Three years of experience in a commercial food service facility; OR an Associate’s Degree in Food Service Management.

What You Will Need

  • Knowledge of retail food service and experience operating commercial food service equipment.

  • Experience in food service safety and sanitation process and procedures.

  • Good customer services skills when working with internal and external customers.

  • Ability to respond positively to changing work demands as well as the ability to work cooperatively and positively with a variety of individuals.

  • The employee in this position will often be required to lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and/or pull carts weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Strong communication skills including the ability to understand and convey written and verbal directions/instructions, recipes, safety information, machine instructions, and other communications.

  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and creating an equitable and inclusive environment.

  • Requires a valid Food Handler’s certificate within 30 days of employment. Must maintain certification throughout employment with UHDS .

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Physical Working Conditions:

  • This is a physically active job in a kitchen and retail environment. Incumbent will experience long periods of standing on a hard floor; working with commercial kitchen/baking equipment; and fluctuations in work flow, temperature and noise level.

  • The employee in this position will often be required to lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and push and/or pull carts weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Schedule:

  • Shift and/or work assignments may be changed based on operational needs.

  • We are a seven days a week operation, so early morning, evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.

  • Good attendance is crucial for stability and day-to-day business needs. Must follow attendance schedule and break schedule, and must be on time and in uniform when shift begins.

  • Employees in this position may be moved from front of house to back of house or vice versa, per term and with advance notice, as based on business needs.

  • This position is deemed essential; and the incumbent is expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.

  • Will require work in areas that prepare and handle raw meat, as well as most common food allergens, including gluten.
