Job Summary

The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an Architect. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The purpose of this position is to assist the Dean/Director, Associate Deans, and the Chief Operating Officer of the College of Agricultural Sciences ( CAS ) and Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station, the statewide branch experiment stations, and the academic departments within CAS , concerning space needs and utilization, maintenance of facilities, safety and fire hazards, facilities planning, remodeling, and construction of new facilities across the state.

The College of Agricultural Sciences is Oregon’s principal source of agricultural and food systems knowledge and a significant source of knowledge regarding environmental quality, natural resources, life sciences, and rural economies and communities worldwide. The college’s 14 departments (three of which are joint with the College of Science) provide undergraduate and graduate education, leading to 13 baccalaureate and 30 graduate degrees and extended education programs throughout Oregon and beyond. With over 3,000 students, 280 professorial faculty, and exceeding $160 million per year in expenditures, the College of Agricultural Sciences ( CAS ) is a complex organization. In addition to the main campus, CAS has faculty-located Branch Experiment Stations in 13 agroecozones across the state and Extension Faculty in each county. CAS is well known for its collaborations among state and federal agencies. Our researchers and Extension faculty work closely with agency partners in EPA , USDA ARS , USGS , US Forest Service, US Navy, USDOE , NIH , NOAA , NMFS , USFWS , as well as state agencies, local governments, and professional organizations. CAS supports faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Health, and the Chemistry, Microbiology, and Statistics departments in the College of Science.

Regional industries and commodity groups are also important partners. Oregon’s remarkable agricultural diversity, with more than 220 commercial commodities, means that many commodity groups depend on OSU research and development to improve their varieties and expand their markets.

This position is a working manager responsible for leading, managing, and overseeing the entire cycle of architectural projects from conception through closeout, while supervising staff who are doing the same.

Key Responsibilities

35% Construction Project Management

Manage the entire construction project lifecycle, from selecting and hiring contractors and consultants to conducting inspections and coordinating with them to ensure compliance with design plans and specifications. Establish and maintain the project budgets, maintain accounts, and review and approve progress billings. Ensure quality control by closely collaborating with local building officials and staying informed about federal, state, county, and city codes and regulations. This will require driving to and from multiple locations across Oregon.

30% Scope Meetings & Design Concepts

Lead scope meetings to assess space and facility needs, explore construction options, and brainstorm innovative design concepts. Develop initial proposals complete with detailed cost estimates. Utilize computer-aided design ( CAD ) tools to create architectural schematics and drawings for facility planning and proposals.

20% Construction Documentation

Manage the creation of comprehensive construction documents and contracts, applying expertise in construction materials and methods. Prepare precise working drawings and specifications, while ensuring all site and building plans are accurately maintained and updated in AutoCAD. Negotiate and oversee subcontracts for civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering and surveying services as needed. Produce detailed construction cost estimates.

15% Additional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough inspections of facilities and provide actionable recommendations for improvement.

  • Develop clear and concise as-built drawings at AES unit sites, detailing locations, dimensions, structural elements, elevations, and grades, ensuring all inspections and calculations are authorized by a licensed structural engineer.

  • Maintain comprehensive records pertaining to sites, utilities, and floor/book plans for AES units

  • Pursue ongoing professional development and training to maintain Architect License and stay current on relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, zoning requirements, building codes, etc.

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify funding opportunities for enhancing facilities and operational functions.

  • Other duties as assigned by college leadership.

What You Will Need

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Architecture (Civil, Structural, Electrical or Mechanical) or a closely related field.

Possession of an Oregon Architect License or must obtain such license within six months of appointment.

Minimum of five years of experience in designing and overseeing building construction and/or renovation.

Minimum of three years of administrative experience, including budget and project management.

Proficient in the use of AutoCAD or related software.

Experience providing leadwork for people with different backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Works in construction sites, including accessing difficult to reach spaces. Climbs stairs and ladders. Walks in uneven terrain. Occasional evening or weekend work. Regular statewide travel to job sites.
