Qualifications: 1) Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or an equivalent foreign degree), and completion of a program in nutrition or dietetics with the appropriate national accreditation; 2) Completion of at least 900 hours of dietetics under the direct supervision of a registered dietitian or nutrition professional; 3) Must be certified as a dietitian or nutrition professional in NY State once requirements met *See Professional Licensure and Certification Requirements

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree with emphasis in nutrition

preferred from an accredited program.

Experience Required: One to three years’ direct care experience with one to two years’ experience in long- term care.

Professional Licensure and Certification Required: Certification in dietetics-nutrition in New York State, or successful completion of the Registered Dietitian examination offered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, or Certified Nutrition Specialist exam offered by the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists are acceptable.

Essential Functions

  • Assess nutrition status, including laboratory data, fluid status, energy and protein needs of resident.

  • Evaluates and interprets data, reviews and modifies plans of care, and delivers nutrition care to residents.

  • Routinely provides nutrition-related information/technical assistance by conducting meal rounds, test trays, menu checks and other services as needed.

  • Accurately assesses, plans and delivers nutrition care to residents fed by enteral means.

  • Prepare residents for self-management of nutrition care.

  • Helps develop and implement Quality Assurance and Improvement processes within the facility.

  • Consults with Food Service Director to develop appropriate therapeutic diets.

  • Makes referrals as necessary to other health care providers.

  • Completes other duties to support departmental operations as assigned or requested.

  • Participates in inspections (surveys) conducted by authorized agencies

  • Provides safe resident nutritional care while demonstrating knowledge and competency in ordering nutritional interventions, and in accordance with physician/NP orders, according to established standards and policies.

  • Maintains awareness of new updates/standards and incorporates them into his/her nutritional practice throughout the continuum of care.

  • Assists co-workers as needed and maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues.

  • Exhibits professional conduct and behavior through cooperative interactions with others and accepts personal responsibility for their own actions.

  • Reports any change in condition of a resident to the appropriate nursing supervisor.

  • Reports any resident care issues to the appropriate nursing supervisor.

  • Assists co-workers as needed and maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues.

  • Exhibits professional conduct and behavior through cooperative interactions with others and accepts personal responsibility for their own actions.
