SUNY Cortland Tutor/Advocate in Cortland, New York

Position Summary:

The Research Foundation at SUNY Cortland is excited to be accepting applications for a part-time tutor/advocate for the Migrant Educational and Tutorial Services ( METS ) Department. This position provides direct academic support and instructional services, offers social support, and coordinates services with various agencies as needed for migrant children and families in the Cayuga County area. This position provides for a flexible 18.75 hours per week providing in-home, in-school, and remote tutoring for English as a New Language ( ENL ), math, and other subject-specific tutoring, as well as relevant advocacy for services and referrals.

As a Research Foundation employee at SUNY Cortland, this position includes yearly cost of living increases and access to professional development opportunities. This part-time position also offers paid time off with compensation of $20,500, annually.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructional support and advocacy services to Migrant eligible students and families in the Cayuga County region and surrounding area.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, providing daytime and occasional early evening instruction, including the ability to work remotely.

  • Connect students and families with necessary academic, health and social services as needed.

  • Independently organize, plan and implement instructional support services to students.

  • Daily travel is required while reimbursement is provided at the IRS standard mileage rate.

  • Responsible for program data entry as needed and required by the METS program.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Attributes (KSAO’s):

  • Ability to efficiently use various technology platforms. (Microsoft, Zoom, etc.)

  • Effective interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain relationships with others.

  • Ability to work and relate well with children through the age of 21 and their parents/families.

  • Ability to transfer knowledge and skill concepts to children and young adults.

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with others.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to be flexible and be able to balance a number of tasks concurrently.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or its equivalent;

  • Ability to transfer knowledge and skill concepts to children and young adults; ability to work and relate well with children through the age of 21 and their parents/families;

  • Access to reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Education or similar field of study;

  • Demonstrated background in education;

  • Demonstrated experience working with people of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Ability to speak or read Spanish
