Guthrie Dietetic Technician - Food Service - Part Time in Cortland, New York

Position Summary:

Working in a team with the clinical dietitian, the diet technician assists in providing quality nutritional care for low to moderate risk patients as assigned; instructs patients and significant others on therapeutic diets and basic nutrition as prescribed by physician and surgeons.

Education, License & Cert:

Must have completed an associate degree program, which meets the standards set forth by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a Diet Technician, registered (DTR) is preferred.

Experience:

Six months prior experience in the dietary department of a hospital or other health care institution desirable.

Essential Functions:

  • Nutrition screening and assessment of individual patients.

  • Review and conduct nutrition screening of patients on specified units.

  • Complete nutrition assessment of individual patients with common medical problems, e.g. Hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cardiac and diverticular disease.

  • Nutrition care of individual patients.

  • Manage the normal nutrition needs of individuals across the lifespan, i.e., infants through geriatrics and a diversity of people, cultures, and religions to include monitoring of patients' food and/or nutrient intake.

  • Reviews existing data in patient medical record including admission and correct diet order; history and physical, laboratory values that indicate nutritional status, and nursing assessment.

  • Recommends the collection of additional pertinent data, as needed.

  • interviews patients and/or significant others for diet history, dietary preference, and nutritional concerns.

  • Design and implement nutrition care plans as indicated by the patient's health status that are thorough, concise, and done in an organized manner.

  • Determine appropriateness of prescribed diet therapy. Recommend changes as necessary.

  • Consults with patients, physician and other hospital personnel to reevaluate dietary regimen to reflect changes in requirements.

  • Conduct nutrition care component of interdisciplinary team conferences to discuss patient care and discharge planning as applicable.

  • Documents nutritional assessment, diagnosis (as applicable), intervention, and monitoring in EMR.

  • Nutrition education of individual patients

  • Develops and updates patient nutrition education materials in their area of expertise.

  • Provide or supervise counseling, education, and/or other interventions in health promotion/disease prevention for patients needing medical nutrition therapy for common conditions, e.g. hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cardiac and diverticular disease.

  • Refer patients/clients to appropriate community services for general health and nutrition needs and to other primary care providers as appropriate.

  • When needed, supervises the patient tray assembly line to ensure quality, accuracy, and timely operation of the tray line.

  • Maintains inventory, rotates stock, and ensures par levels of oral nutrition supplement and tube feed formulas are maintained.

  • Assists in the creation and implementation of fortified foods for patient population in addition to assistance with modifying specialty diets as applicable.

Other Duties:

  1. Must have knowledge of employee relations, ethics, food sanitation, safety, food and labor laws, housekeeping procedures, and accepted food service techniques.

  2. Must be familiar with principles of nutrition as related to menu planning, preparation of quality food, high standards of food service and clinical nutrition.

The pay for this position ranges from $18.55-29.40 per hour.
