Summary:

Conducts and assists process development projects for automated electronics assembly. Specific knowledge and experience in the manufacture of electronic assemblies using automated assembly equipment associated with Surface Mount Electronics Assembly is desired. Primary focus includes the ability to support and use automated assembly equipment to support customer projects, specifically dispensing equipment for underfill and adhesive applications. Conducts projects in conjunction with Universal Instruments personnel, outside consultants, and university faculty and students. Reports to the Manager of the Advanced Process Lab (APL).

Principal Accountabilities:

· Principal operator for process development projects for either customer driven, or internal research projects.

· Create equipment programs as needed when applications present themselves.

· Design of Experiment; printed wiring board test vehicles, solder paste stencils, mechanical test fixtures, etc.

· Interact with suppliers of electronic materials for PCBA.

· Utilize best engineering practices and job related experience to solve daily problems arising from customer requests for process assistance in electronics assembly.

· Perform management functions on selected projects including budgeting project resources and time, detailed job tracking records, and presentations of results.

· Maintain the materials inventory and database.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

Specific experience with the following is a plus and highly desirable:

· Automated dispensing equipment for underfill and epoxy/adhesive dispensing.

· Support the setup and operation of PCB assembly line including solder paste printing, solder paste inspection, pick and place machinery, reflow oven, automated optical inspection.

· Must possess knowledge of basic soldering and rework of SMT components.

· Performs detailed quality inspection of printed circuit assemblies with respect to industry standards, ie. IPC

· Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions as well as product and procedure manuals.

· Knowledgeable across many several engineering disciplines including but not limited to flow principles, mechanical design, metallurgy, physics, etc.

· Familiarity with microscopes, measuring devices and other necessary tools.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS in an engineering discipline with minimum 2+ years of experience; Relevant advanced degree preferred.

  • AS degree with 4+ years in an engineering or electronics assembly related field will be considered.

  • Ability to quickly learn the operation of various laboratory and SMT assembly equipment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

    Responsibility for Quality Procedures or Direct Product Quality:

    · Adheres to Universal Quality System policies and procedures and uses Total Cycle Time principles and standard problem solving tools to continuously improve work processes.

    Physical Demands:

  • Requires the ability to use a computer on a frequent basis.

  • Requires the ability to communicate clearly in giving presentations.

  • Sit or stand for up to 6 hours at a time.

  • The ability to travel to customer sites or technical conferences may be occasionally required.
