The Multi-Spindle Screw Machine Operator, sets-up and operates the Davenport Machine to perform basic machining operations such as knurling, threading, grinding, drilling, etc., of various sizes and types of complex production parts to the required exacting tolerances per blueprint drawing or other specifications. Reports any problems or issues with machinery or machines the lead or department supervisor.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction and supervision, the Davenport SUO Level C performs the following:

• Set-up Davenport multi-spindle screw machine making required adjustments to diameters, grip lengths, cut depths, etc., to tolerances of ± .0001. Uses various support tools and equipment such as wrenches, pliers, calipers, micrometers etc. to set-up, maintain and repair machines. Plans sequence of machining operations using machining theory to optimize material utilization, minimize set-ups, maximize machine usage.

• Loads parts in position and secures part to holding device. Verifies part position, selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, tooling, cams, springs, collets and other variable tasks and items based upon the most efficient method to produce parts using various materials and cutting/finishing tooling. Adapts tooling, cams etc. adjusting or modifying same to ensure proper machining or machine functioning.

• Ability to read blueprints or other documentation to visualize parts to be machined. Checks initial parts including 1st article to exacting tolerances. Applies SPC principles and practices to production runs. Visually checks work in progress to assure proper functioning of equipment.

• Ability to analyze problems and take corrective action within delegated authority. Ability to learn or utilize theory and methods of adapting tooling, condensing setups, making shop aids, etc. Ability to make repairs or modify tools as needed and understands the importance of reporting basic problems with machining of parts or machines operated to either the lead or department supervisor.

• Completes necessary counts and processes documentation correctly. Maintains daily production logs using computer software applications or production worksheets. Keeps interim records for subassemblies, material, tooling, rework, etc. while in the cell.

• Operates computer terminals to input data as required.

• Works as an active team member by participating in problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve processes, productivity, quality, of the production operations in the department. Utilizes interpersonal skills, possesses good written and verbal communication skills. Assists other cell members as required.

Equipment/Process Responsibilities - Performs duties where property, tools, equipment, or machines may be substantially damaged, or substantial man hours lost through improper operation and attention to processing. Sets-up and calibrates a minimum of 2 Davenport machines for the jobs performed. Maintains and learns to effect minor repairs of machines. Davenports may have various spindle diameters from 3/16" to 3/4" and may be 5, 6, or 8 spindle bar or chucker machine.

Material or Product Responsibilities - Performs duties that require close attention to work and supporting documentation specifications and other requirements. Responsible for accuracy of parts machined. Visually and/or with measuring instruments checks work performed for proper results, work is machined to exacting tolerances. Parts machined include inconel, titanium, etc. where hardness of part creates difficult machining responsibilities.

Responsibility for Work of Others -Accuracy of communication is mandatory to the successful production and qualification of workpieces per specifications. Must communicate to appropriate personnel any problems or concerns regarding quality of work received or time flow of work in progress as it affects production schedules. Works with higher level Davenport Operators, Cell Facilitators and supervisory personnel to assure quality of product and solve problems.

Safety Responsibilities - Good housekeeping, knowledge of good machining safety is necessary. Adherence to Company Safety Rules is mandatory. Protective equipment and clothing appropriate to the task at hand is required.

Initiative and Ingenuity - Requires some initiative in solving basic problems associated with the set-up and operation of Davenport machines and uses some ingenuity in adapting tooling and shop aids to complete machining operations. Makes suggestions for improving the efficiency of workflow or equipment operation. Takes on or reports for additional work as current tasks are completed. Performs other work-related tasks as deemed necessary by Company needs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Environmental Surroundings -Work is in a machine shop environment where noise, temperature fluctuations, the repetitive nature of the job, the heat, dirt, grease, oil, etc.

Unavoidable Hazards -Possible hazards related to cuts, bruises, finger and hand injuries and muscle strains. Awkward body positions are necessary at times. Exposure to metalworking fluids and airborne particles. Appropriate protective equipment and clothing are required.

EFFORT

Physical- Able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires strength to adjust requisite equipment to set-up specifications. Hand and finger manipulation. Able to reach, bend and stretch. Able to use tools required for machine set-up which may be fatiguing and require extensive physical exertion for extended periods of time.. Most job assignments require standing and/or sitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes at a time.

Mental -Work is highly repetitive and monotonous. Set-up and/or machine repair may require highly complex improvisation and ingenuity. Reasoning ability required to interpret complex blueprints and documentation of a highly technical nature. Must be able to draw valid conclusions from a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Required to run Davenport machines and be able to organize workflow for best efficiency under general supervision with frequent review.

Visual - Close attention to detail with moderate eye concentration over long periods of time. Able to read various precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc. Must be able to visually check workpieces for quality. Requires Distance vision, close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception

Pay Range: $26.78 - $42.34 Depending on experience.
