Job Summary

Provide support and leadership related to the research, preparation, review, analysis and cost recovery of accounting transactions for AEP’s utility and non-utility subsidiaries.

Additionally, job duties to be focused in one or more of the following accounting disciplines:

Job Description

Work Designation -- remote preferably in AEP's service territory in these states: OH, WV, VA, KY, TN, IN, MI, OK, TX, LA, AR. Other states and locales may be considered based on payroll, tax and benefits.

Based on education, experience and interview, these four (4) opportunities will be filled commensurately at either level within the Accountant job family . For this posting, minimum requirements are written at the lower grade. Increased expectations are at the higher grade.

Accountant Principal (grade 8)

Accountant Sr. (grade 7) = bachelor's degree + three or more (3+) years of experience

Discipline 1 – Corporate Accounting

  • Perform general ledger accounting functions, including journal entry development and review, general ledger account reconciliation review for high-risk accounts, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, balance sheet reviews, detailed account activity analysis through the development and use of data analytic tools and processes, and other required responsibilities related to the closing process.

  • Participate in the development and support of rate case testimony.

  • Participate in the monthly accounting closing process, including the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly and year-to-date account variance analyses.

  • Serve as a team leader to support management in planning resources, activities, and meeting deadlines related to the accounting function.

  • Serve as a process leader with AEP’s third-party provider of core accounting services through the oversight and review of key accounting functions.

  • Review and analyze monthly account activity for accuracy, support and financial integrity.

  • Develop and perform detailed analytic procedures to proactively identify potential internal control issues and to add business insight to other AEP business partners.

  • Assist in the review of FERC financial reports on a quarterly and annual basis.

  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements, accompanying footnotes and MD&A.

  • Assist in the preparation and review of internal management reports.

  • Respond to data requests from internal and external auditors.

  • Provide appropriate support and analysis of AEP regulatory filings and proceedings.

Discipline 2 – Financial Reporting

  • Assist in the preparation and review of SEC and other financial reports, including Forms 10-K, 10-Q, Form 1 and Form 3Q.

  • Prepare and/or review journal entries to support consolidation process and financial statement preparation process.

  • Assist in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data for internal and external customers.

  • Perform analytical review of financial data.

  • Interpret complex accounting theory.

  • Interpret and apply accounting regulations and pronouncements.

  • Maintain compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley control processes.

Discipline 3 – Accounting Policy & Research

  • Effectively communicate technical accounting matters and new accounting standards with the appropriate levels of the AEP organization.

  • Serve as the Company's subject matter expert with respect to GAAP, FERC and SEC accounting matters, on topics that may include expertise in benefit accounting, utility composite depreciation, ARO, revenue recognition, leasing standards, impairments, abandonments and contingent liabilities.

  • Drive consensus with external auditors regarding the Company's routine and complex accounting positions, policies, procedures and disclosure requirements.

  • Support Executive Management in critical decision-making activities that drive and enhance business performance and /or related impact to the Company's financial results.

  • Ensure business units have an understanding of accounting policies and how the implementation of these policies may impact operational processes.

  • Collaborate with ledger accounting, financial reporting and business unit partners to ensure appropriate accounting conclusions are reached, vetted with the Company's external auditors and implemented in a timely manner.

Discipline 4 – Regulatory Accounting Services

  • Support regulatory activities by preparing and coordinating regulatory accounting data and processes.

  • Analyze financial data and provide analysis to management.

  • Provide accounting instructions to other accounting departments by issuing accounting memos from the outcome of regulatory proceedings.

  • Inform accounting management about regulatory activities.

  • Develop, create, modify, and manage regulatory accounting models for specific regulatory jurisdictions.Prepare and coordinate various regulatory schedules and exhibits across functional lines of business. Analyze and research accounting transactions

  • Provide accounting instructions to other accounting departments as required from regulatory proceedings.

Other Accountabilities

  • Develop and cultivate positive business relationships between Accounting and other AEP business partners.

  • Proactively assess, develop and enhance processes and procedures on a continuous basis.

  • Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the AEP Corporate Compliance policy.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business with a concentration in Accounting

Experience: three or more (3+) years

Additional Expectations:

  • Strong competency in written and oral communication.

  • CPA or progress towards certification preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word required and PeopleSoft experience a plus.

  • Detail oriented with an ability to employ a logical approach to accomplish objectives and solve issues.

  • Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions and adapt to changing circumstances and requirements.

INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: ($83,413 - $122,491). In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual incentive, 401(k), pension, health insurance, life/AD&D insurance, educational assistance, etc.

Compensation Range:

$83,413.00-104,267.50 USD

Candidates will be considered based on their qualifications and the candidate’s ability to work from an approved work location. Although the location is flexible, AEP does not have a presence in all states and localities. The following locations are NOT currently approved for this position: AK, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IA, ID, KS, MA, ME, MS, MT, ND, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, RI, SD, UT, VT, WY, US Territories or international work locations. AEP will consider qualified candidates who are willing to relocate to an approved work location, at the candidate’s expense, provided the relocation can be completed within a timeframe that meets AEP’s staffing needs.
